Gluing Veneer

I need a quick answer, if your kind folks would be so willing. I am in the middle of a small box project. I have some of my walnut root material ready to glue up to some backing material. The veneer will end up being about 1/8" thick, 1-1/2" wide and approx. 8" long. However, I don't have enough hardwood to use for backing. Would there be anything wrong with using a softwood as a veneer backing? (again, this is walnut root material/burl)
