Both of my 14.4v XRP batteries are dead. Does anyone know where I can get new ones cheap? The prices I have seen put two batteries darn close to buying the whole package!

I rebuilt my 14.4 Dewalt packs with the kits from Jason Able, an SMC member. They are almost better than new...and for less money than buying one new pack if I'm remembering correctly.

I had two 14.4 packs rebuilt at Interstate Batteries and if I remember correctly the total of those two was less than one new one. As others have said, it made my drill perform better than ever. My run time on a battery is also excellent now.

I noticed that you rebuilt your own with the kits from Jason. Was it easy? Did you save a significant amount of money buying the kits and on shipping?

Doing it myself was pretty easy, Roland, and yes, the cost was lower. The biggest challenge was getting the solder to stick. You need a gun for that; a simple pencil soldering iron will not do.

Don't forget to check eBay, too. I was able to purchase several DeWalt original 14.4 V batteries from eBay last year for the same price as rebuilt batteries.

Just be careful rebuilding some of the older ones where glued together, the newer ones scre together. Easy to do yourself. I got burned with the glue together packs.

Paul, as Jim has mentioned, it's pretty easy to rebuild your own battery packs, as I have done this twice already with the rebuilt packs better now than when they were new. There are several sites on the web with very good step by step instructions on how to do this if you search for "cordless tool battery pack rebuilding". I used the instructions from Astromart.com which are excellent, when you get to the site just do a search for the article "Rebuilding NiCd rechargable Battery Packs" and you will have all the info you'll need. And one more thing, I rebuilt both packs for under $20.00 each.
