can someone driscribe to me how they use DNA to dry wood. I assume you soak the wood but for how long and lets say for a 1" thick piece how long for soaking it to and drying it so there will be no movement. How do you use this tequnique on large bowls?

Howdy Jason,

I've used this method for a few years now. Strictly for my bowls and hollow forms though. Here's what I do:

1. Rough turn my piece leaving the walls a little less that 10% of the diameter thick.
2. I place it in a tub and let it soak for about 24 hours in a DNA bath.
3. Next night I take the rough turning out of the DNA bath.
4. Let is air dry for about 15 minutes.
5. Wrap it in 2 layers of newpaper or heavy craft paper.
6. Cut a hole in the opening over the inside of the bowl.
7. Turn it upside down on a rack to dry for about 21 to 30 days.
8. Unwrap the bowl and place it on a shelf until I'm ready to finish turn it.

I put an article in the Articles section of SMC on processing bowl blanks. The idea came from Dave Smith...thank Dave..!!
