Good evening everyone

Ken Salisbury probably thought this day would never come. Last year Ken showed up at the Five Barns Picnic with the prettiest piece of curly cherry I had ever seen. It was for me I promised hi I would do something special with it, but that meant sitting on it (not literally!) and thinking about it. Well the muse finally took hold a few weeks ago, and I turned a plate out of a section of the board. I took pictures, but they did not come out well, as the figure was not displayed. I took some more tonight with a new set up, and this time they worked. They still do not do total justice to the wood figure, but then again, I have never seen a picture that does.

Here it is. This plate is approximately 11" in diameter and 3/4" high. Finish is Watco Danish Oil, and buffed with a Beall system.

Thanks for looking, and Ken, thanks again for such a beautiful piece of wood.

Bill,

I had no doubt that whenever you got around to it you would make something beautiful. Now the question is what are ya gonna do with the other 6' of the board ? :D. You are right about photos not doing justice to that batch of lumber (which I still have about 50 bdft heavily guarded). Attached is a photo which really shows the figure of that wood after an oiled finish has mellowed.

Nothing against your picture taking, Bill, but I remember alot more figure on that board than that! Whaddya say, Bill? I think you and me can take that old Rebel--I saw where he keeps that cherry. :D Besides, he'll never get around to using it--he still has about 197,000 pens to turn! :D :p

Bill, great plate! Your craftsmanship always, always amazes me. Once my new shop is built, when my budget allows a lathe I can see a trip out east for some lessons!

Ken, you stole Bill's thread with your photo but I'm sure he doesn't mind. Great hope chest and that truly shows the figure of the wood! Unbelievebly beautiful figure! Neat design on that hope chest. Good workmanship. I'm drooling! :D

Thanks guys, for your kind words. In looking at that picture again, I see I am going to have to make or buy a plate stand for pictures. The angle of the camera makes it look like it is turned on a eccentric, when actually it was turned by an eccentric! :D
