View Full Version : Walnut bed finally done

Rick de Roque

Well the walnut bed is finally done. So now the whole bedroom set is done. The whole bedroom set just took 2 1/2 years. But being just a weekend hobbyist that's fine.
This is my first bed and I found making a bed to be one of the more challenging projects.
This is all made from the same tree except for the figured panels. The bed is a king size 80" x 78". I still need to make the bed bolt covers. I will be turning them on the lathe. The finish is BLO with a varnish (Waterlox) top coat. You can see the rest of the bedroom set at my link at the bottom of this post.
Thanks for looking.http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y118/rd4212/woodworking%20stuff/bed1.jpg?t=1218348090

Ah, words that come to mind are, stunning, breathtaking, fantastic, beautiful, and simply "wow!" Great job on this bed. Perfect use of the figure for the panels. It gives a perfect look to the bed.

Very nice!! Would love to see the rest of the pieces, but did not find the link. Did I miss it? Also, Rick, where did you get the crotch walnut - great figure and color and you made very good use of it. The balance is great. Looks like you used some of the figured wood on the drawers of the other pieces, but hard to tell. Was it veneered? The panels on the bed appear to be solid and glued up.

All the wood in this bedroom set was cut down and dried by me. Which made it a little more special. The veneer is shop cut 1/32" applied to solid walnut with hide glue.

Thanks for all the nice comments.

That looks fantastic, excellent job on all aspects!!
Are the panels veneer or you found those nice looking patterns in hardwood?

edit: sorry, now I see you say they are veneer.

The end result speaks for itself. Simply awesome. But I am equally impressed that you harvested and dried all the wood yourself. That takes forethought and patience. Did you have this particular project in mind when you were cutting up the trees, or did you think about what to make afterwards?

For this particular project, yes, I had this bed in mind because I usually cut most everything 5/4 but I cut most of this 8/4 and 7/4 for the thicker rails all around the bed.
Most of the time I cut the trees as they become available and the project comes later.
Thanks,
Rick

Rick,
That is just outstanding. Probably take me that long for the bed, let alone the rest! I love the panels.

Is there a particular reason you used solid stock as the veneer substrate as opposed to a man-made one (MDF or BB)?

Mark

I use the solid substrate because I route with a core bit around the panels which gives a shadow line and the tongue for the groove. MDF or ply would not look as good in this situation. I don't have a problem using MDF or ply as a substrate but just not in this case.

Thanks for the nice comments.

Very nice.

Where did you take the wood to get it sliced for veneer? I have some nice Koa I want to get cut in veneer sheets, but am having a difficult time finding a place that has a slicer.

Gorgeous figure though. I like the graduated panel sizes, it is a nice subtle change that gives it some variation in the look.

I resaw the veneer on my bandsaw. I saw it to 3/32" and drum sand it to about 1/16". If you don't have a bandsaw I'm sure some woodworker near you has one that might help you out.

P.S. Thanks for noticing the graduated panels. I felt since a king size bed is basically square that the panels needed some graduation to give it less of a square look.

Nice on the panels. I have a bandsaw i can resaw up to 12" on, but not a drum sander, which will be on my list when I want to start cutting up some more veneers.

Very nice overall work.

Awe inspiring work! If you have any "in progress" pics of how you structured the bed to support a king size box spring underneath, I would like to see those too.

The fact that you milled the wood yourself really makes it a hand crafted item to be proud of.

How did you get the cut the curve on the top horizontal of the footboard and headboard?

Mike,
I cut the top rails into 3 with an 11 1/4° bevel which gave a 45° curve, then the concave part was done on the TS and the convex part was done with hand planes and scrapers. Here is a pic of the side view of the rail before forming the concave and convex parts.

Rick, that turned out simply awesome. When are you inviting me over to look at it in person :D
I am still working on mine, from the Walnut I got from you, I think about a year ago :o I just need a top coat on the rails and it should be all done. It's quite simplistic compared to this one.

Chris,
Yes, the panels are 3 different sizes. They increase 2" per panel from outside to the center. I felt since the bed is square (king size) that graduated panels would give it a less "squareness" look and give it more interest as someone looks at it.

Thanks for the nice comments.
