Help Identifying logs

I have a co-worker who, because I'm the guy who works with wood here, asked me about some logs he found on his property. He was told they were Linden, but we looked and I know for sure it is not linden. The bark is smooth and medium brown. The heartwood looks red and it is pretty hard. Tight grained wood, and the leaves he described as similar to walnut in arrangement. We are in Southern Maryland. Any ideas?

Can you post some photos and tell us what part of the world the logs came from? :confused:

I don't have any photos, I'll try to get some. We are in Southern Maryland and that is where the logs are from. He's offered me some but I'm trying to figure out the species.

Also try the Woodweb forums. The loggers and sawmill operators there may be able to help.

In any case, you will almost certainly need several photos.
