This was a chunk of pear I picked up from a neighbor that had been in his firewood pile for 4 or 5 years. I could have cut it smaller to get rid of the endgrain checking, but I wanted to see how big a bowl I could get out of it.
I actually finished it almost a month ago, but hadn't gotten around to posting for a variety of reasons. My son has already been using it as a popcorn bowl, so the finish inside isn't all that great any more. Interestingly, it seems like there was some figure in the wood which you can see on the outside. Wonder what kind of stuff got burned...
About 10.5" in diameter, 4" deep, walls are thick due to the checking - .5".
