question about using an angle grinder for carving

i have started to use a angle grinder to carve out that bowl from a while ago. the disk that is on it now is one of those black carn with threads through it, grinding disks. i tried to use it and it didnt seem to do much to the wood except burn it. is this the wrong disk?

yes...try a structured carbide disk...will cut like butter. there are chainsaw blades also but i like the carbide
