I'm only an occasional neandertool user, but a couple of old planes followed me home from an auction. This one was paired with a similar one with a flat sole that I would compare to a #5. Length of the sole is 13 1/2", and the iron is 2" wide and curved to match the sole.

You got yourself a nice old concave sole woody. Are there any markings on it? Not going to be able to tell much more about it without maker's marks.

The iron is marked "Moulson Brothers Warranted Cast Steel" with a 8-pointed asterisk in the middle. No maker's mark, but the owner's mark "J. PASCOE" is punched in three places. I'm no expert, but I think it's made of some sort of beech based on the "flake" patterns on the sides.

Or rather *convex* shaped sole...

There are a couple options I suppose (and probably more) for the use of that plane.

It's a failry large radius and so most likely isn't a gutter plane. It perhaps was used on a ship, or fairing insides of coopered work. The iron is made by a long-time firm in England. A good one at that.

But without a maker's mark, it would be impossible to determine for certainty whether it was made by a commercial firm or an individual. Either way, it looks in fine shape!

Take care, Mike
