Hard maple soaked for a day or two in mineral oil. I did not like them as well as cool blocks.

My current set is made from lignum vitae. They have held up well for ~6 years and will probably endure as long as the saw.
I tried cool blocks years back but did not like the smell when they wore or heated---like burning rubber.
The oil-impregnated maple idea above sounds good.

Lignum Vitae as it's very hard. Hard enough that wooden bearing for propellor shafts on ships are made from it or were. And it's naturally oily which makes it a perfect as a BS guide.
Sarge..
