A customer at my business found out that I turn. He brought in a piece of wood that he liked. It was basically an oak knot that had some burl on it. He really liked the swirl look of the burl on the outside. He told me to "see what I could do with it". Did not know what to do with it so it was design on the fly.

I finished it today. 8 1/4" x 3" - Danish Oil - very, VERY thick walls and quite hefty. Sure was a different piece for me. There was no bark on it and the outside was only brushed to remove some of the dirt, etc. I like how it came out.

Toney - that sure is some cool wood! Lots of charactor to this piece! Are you keeping this piece or is it going back to the customer?

That is different Toney. Thick walls not my cup of tea but the wood is awesome. Lots of character and great color.

Toney...that wood has some ebb and flow to it. You can almost imagine water coming out of a blow hole in a rock along the ocean. Very artsty....your shape allows it to happen....

Nicely done.

Nice work! Of love the form. Sometimes, a piece of less then perfect wood comes out perfect.

Thanks for sharing...

Sometimes you just have to show the "wood". you had a greatly figured block of wood, and you have sculptered it to maximize the figure. it is a very artsy piece, and you are to be congratulated on recognizing and being able to bring out the beauty in the wood. :D:D:D:D:D

Thanks for all the kind comments.

Curtis, I used a dowel rod clamped in a vice to determine the center of mass for the piece so it did not vibrate much at all.

Ken, I felt the same thing. Like spring water flowing up or lava oozing out of the ground. The rim design grew out of wanting to eliminate some bandsaw marks. Strange how things happen.

Steve, You ask an interesting question. Nothing was stated about money or even if he wanted the finished piece back when he gave me the piece of wood soooooo I think I will present to him and see what happens. Not terribly business like of me but oh well.

Here is the top and bottom for Barry and Tim. There was some large cracks in the knot. Kind of like a start burst. I filled them with epoxy and key dust but it has moved since I finished it.

You can see on the bottom shot where one piece of filler came loose and I took it out. I don't think I will refill it. I am worried about putting it back on the lathe because of all the bad things that could happen. :(
