I decided when I started shaping this piece of wood that maybe I'd try to save some of the burl edge around the opening instead of making a collar from other wood. As it turned out there's a little bit of the natural edge that continued down from the opening. It's Silver Maple burl that I kept wrapped in shrink wrap to get it to spalt. 6" x 6", antique oil, waxed, and buffed.

Curt,

I really like the NE HF! You nailed the form and finish and the wood speaks for itself.

Nicley done sir!

Would you please elaborate on how you got it to spalt?

Nice piece Curt. I'm glad you left the top natural. I also like the natural edge going down the front. How long did you work to spalt this one?

Curt,

Would you please elaborate on how you got it to spalt?

Thanks Ken!

The wood was cut green. I wrapped it in some stretch wrap, clear wrapping stuff you can get in the shipping supplies at places like Staples or Office Depot. It doesn't let the wood breath so all the moisture condenses and the wood starts getting all moldy and slimy looking. After a few month I cut off the shrink wrap, wash off the mold, and the wood is pretty spalted by then.

Curt - that is one of the most visually stunning hollow forms I have ever seen! Love the spalted burl, the form and most of the all the way you kept the natural edge! I saved this one to my favorites! Absolutely stunning work Curt - you should be proud of this one! Can't wait to see what you come up with next!!!

Excellent is all aspects - workmanship, design, form, wood, finish and color. I love the opening. It reminds me of a volcano at it's moment of fury.

I'm very interested in your spalting technique. I have some silver maple that I'm seasoning. I'll wrap a few up.

Your pieces are always a delight to the eye.

I love this piece. You give a wonderful set of presentation surfaces to explore the work of nature in wood. On an artistic level, I love the contrast between form, order, and chaos of the NE and the smooth planes. Underlining contrast of burl and smoothness. Finished but wild.

Trying to put words to the beautiful presentation you have exposed and created. Sorry. I can't help myself -- I was an art major.

Well done.
