Just a simple candy dish. Oak and walnut with a shellawax finish. Measures 9 1/4 x 2 1/4.

Mike, with this kind of design, the base is always the most challenging. How did you handle this base?

I am attempting my first segmented form so I can appreciate the skill,time and effort involved.Very nice work !!
As far as Mr. Tibbetts work...I,m in awe.

Mike, with this kind of design, the base is always the most challenging. How did you handle this base?


Richard and Malcolm, I ca glued the top to a piece of mdf and face plate so I could turn two little rabbets one the bottom of the rings. The bottom is just a solid piece of oak. I glued it to a piece of mdf and put it on a face plate and turned the rabbets on it to match the rings and then glued them together with regular wood glue. I am aware of wood movement and the grain orientation, but I'm hoping with the extra stability of the two rabbets and extra glue surface that it will be ok, time will tell, and I suspect it will only be on my shelf so... I made a couple of these in the same manor about 18 years ago and the joint has held up good.

Nice little bowl Mike! Love the contrasting woods and the design! Nice joints and finish!
