I've never seen cherry like this before. I know its around, but I got this for FREE, and had NO idea it would turn out like this. It came from the root burl of a tree that was blown over last year on the farm next door. This piece was totally underground. Being blown over, the entire root burl was uprooted at the same time; it went almost 24" underground at about the same diameter It is a present for my girlfriend; its our 2 year anniversary. The piece was sanded to 400, then 2 liberal coats of minwax antique oil. I'm not buffing this one; not enough time!!! I may add some paste wax later.

I'm not a photographer, and the piece is really much more impressive in person. A photo tent is in my near future.

MORE PICS!

BTW, because of time constraints, I'm leaving the foot of this one alone. I think it looks good with a foot, anyway. The loml won't notice the chuck marks on the bottom, anyway.

I forgot to post the measurements for this and another piece. This one is a hair over 13", x 12" in the narrow spot. Its about 8" tall.

I love this piece. It shows that the best figure hides in the stump. I am glad you saved it,posted it and shared it with us. :D:D:D

Nathan,

Really pretty work. That cherry seems alive. I hope that you will take the time to buff the antique oil after it has set a week or so. I did a cherry bowl with 3 coats of antique oil after sanding to 440, and then about a week later use the 3 step buffing wheel. The glow and then feel of the wood is something else (can't take a picture of feel).

Thanks for the replies, folks. Thomas, you're right about the feel! Even now, just a couple days into drying, its starting to shrink with the figure, getting that wonderful wavy feel. I have a mulberry crotch platter that was turned green; it really feels alive with all the wavy ridges in it! I have to forgo the buffing until later; I'm travelling to WV for a music festival (with some bowls to hopefully sell....), and have to leave tomorrow. I'll get my lady to bring it over & I'll buff it after the festival. I wish I had more of this wood! There are actually several more pieces, but none with figure like this. I've sawn round blanks out of several pieces, but this was the very best figure; hence its a present!

I forgot to post this pic taken a while back, as an update. This is after about a year and a half of indirect sun exposure in a bright room. These are NOT photoshopped. Taken on a canon digital rebelXT. http://sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=151860&stc=1&d=1275191395

What a difference a couple of years makes!! Beautiful color, and I assume since you still have access to the bowl, you still have the girl, too!!:D:D

Well....no, but it was amicable for both of us.

Thanks for all the compliments, folks! It is amazing to me how much different a piece of wood may look after a couple years! I had a feeling when I turned it that it would end up blood red with some time. The shavings came off a deep orange-red. I have several more bowls that were turned from this wood, and never finished, that I'll finish over time. I like to keep a variety of different wood species in the gallery flow. Thanks again folks!
