This is the second turning from the maple I harvested a couple of months ago. Has a little bit of everything: bark, knot, curl, flame and even a small cross section of a branch.

Bowl is 10 ½” diameter x 4 ¼” high x ½” thick. Sanded to 400 grit and has 5 coats of Minwax Wipe-On Gloss Poly. Will wait about a week or so and then buff it.

As always, comments, critiques and opinions are welcome!

Thanks for looking!

Steve,
I have no idea how you turn out so many great pieces, in such a short span. This is another great looking piece. It's a real eye catcher. Good form, and great tool technique. Thanks for sharing.

Very Nice....

Was just chain sawing some tree stumps in the yard today from a torando and was thinking maybe someone wanted wood for a bowel :)

Its Bradford Pear wood and dont think it worth shipping :(

I am always inpressed with your creations, and how they always look better when I get to hold them in my hand as I did this piece yesterday. It is interesting too for me to to be more impatient waiting for your next piece than I am for anything I'm doing. Go cherry burl.:):):)

yup... a little of everything, Steve. I wonder, too how the heck you can work so fast :D. Great work and plenty of it! I always look forward to seeing your next piece.

Very nice. I love how the veins run through the piece.

Like you said, a little bit of everything.

I have nothing else to add but want to complement you on this bowl. Nice size, proportions. That maple is fantastic. Well done!

Did you use anything special on the bark inclusion ??

Steve, Couple of nice maple bowls in the last couple of days. I really like this one with the knots, branch, etc.
Question on the finish - do you sand between coats?

Thanks everyone for all the kind words - I do appreciate it!

Leo - I usually leave the bark/inclusions as is and only saturate with poly when finishing the bowl. I have filled voids in the past but find I much prefer the look and feel of the imperfections as they exist.

Jim - I use a small sanding sponge (320 grit) between each coat to just wipe the bowl off and knock off any small bumps. You shouldn't have to do this each and every time but I find it just takes a moment and prevents a finish build on an unintended bump.

Again - thanks everyone for all th kind words!
