Belt driven saws are by far superior to direct drive saws. Motor diameter limits the blade height on direct drive saws much more so than belt driven. And if the motor ever dies you will have a very difficult time replacing it. Most motor bearings weren't designed to take the loads that they will see from a blade cutting wood so motor failure is likely. The flexible shaft type direct drives should be avoided.

Bob, I owned one of those for 5 years or more. For my needs, it performed flawlessly, and I sold it to a co-worker who is very happy with it.
I used sharp 40 tooth, mostly thin kerf, blades on 3/4" hard and softwoods, and a lot of plywood, with no problems.
I think that if you you use it sensibly and don't try to rip 2" oak you will be fine. I was. Only reason I upgraded was a deal too good to pass up came along.
