We are looking for a specialty drink for our wedding.
i.e. big bottle of punch , rums ,juices etc. all mixed up.

Anyone here have a good recipe. Its 70 guest about 6 hours.

I did see watermelons that were carved out from the top, insides are blended an then put liquor in and then buy a faucet tap from hardware store, tap the bottom an use that as your spigot.

Thanks

Mohito's are all the rage out here in vermont....so that must make them 4 or 5 years past being "now".....maybe more???:D

we also like making malibu rum/pineapple juice/cranberyjuice punch here on really hot days.

Craig,
How about Sangria? Wine, Rum, Fresh Fruit (Apples, Oranges, Limes, Lemons) and 7-Up. Cut up the fruit and add the wine and let marinate for a few days. Before you serve, add Rum and 7-Up.

I was stationed in Spain and this is the basic recipe. Enjoy!

My weddings in Mass my mom has talked about mojitos a few months ago. I guess they travled up to you now.
I remember them being the rage in California about 5 yrs ago or more. They come back around. There too sweet for me.
Rum punch sounds good.

Try "Old Oak Rum" Take a 55 gallon barrel of white oak sawdust (preferably from grinding up an old charred oak whiskey barrel) and fill it with good rum. Let it sit for a week and then strain the rum through several layers of cheesecloth to get out most of the sawdust. Definitely not too sweet and everyone will know you are a woodworker....

6-8 oz of Absolute Citron
6-8 oz of Midori
1/2 a gallon of Newman's Own Lemonade.

Serve with ice in tumblers.

It's the best outdoor summer drink I know of.
Keep the kids away from it.

If I might give you a little advice ... DON'T!!

Until recently I ran a Wedding DJ business to fund the resurrection of my woodworking hobby. The bane of my existance was drunken guests ... particularly women.

Punch will be a preferred drink for the ladies. They won't realise they're getting drunk until it is too late. Then you'll have (1) outrageous dancing (that's not so bad), (2) a burning desire to sing (that is probably bad if you let them near a microphone), (3) slobbering, drunken requests for songs where the don't know the name, can't remember the tune, not sure of the year, but it was POPULAR so it must be played, and (4) vomiting. Copious vomiting.

I've stopped taking bookings, got six months of weddings remaining, then I won't do any more. Tired of drunk women and difficult debtors.

Take a hint for a successful, memorable (for the RIGHT reasons) wedding, and go light on the alcohol.

Finally a topic I can offer expert advise on :D. Not sure this is the type of "party" for this drink, but I'll offer it for future reference.

Holt's Hurricane

Tall large cup (not glass, this drink is a killer) with crushed ice.

Standard shot of each:

Myers Dark Rum
99 Bananas
Malibu Coconut Rum
Malibu Pineapple Rum
Malibu Passion Fruit Rum
Midori
Bacardi 151

Top off the cup with Hawaiian Punch, garnish with orange, pineapple, and cherries

It scales, so you can make them by the pitcher or by the vat. In large quantities, you can just dump the garnish in in the manner of Sangria. The liquor mix doesn't turn out terribly different in taste to the punch, so you could scale it back to make a more lightweight drink.

Prepared a single large drink at a time, one, maybe two will make for a fun evening!

I had something like this years ago in New Orleans. Delicious, and goes down like Kool-Aid, but then watch out if you have more than one and do have a designated driver!

Here's another one that's nice and refreshing:

1 small can (6 oz.) frozen orange juice concentrate
6 oz. fresh lemon juice
2 small cans (total 12 oz.) frozen lemonade concentrate.
2 1/4 qts. (72 oz.) pre-chilled 7 UP
2 1/2 cups (20 oz.) blended Whiskey
Mix in punch bowl. Add 7 UP last. Add drops of red food coloring as
desired (optional). Add ice cubes or lumps of ice. Garnish fresh fruit.

you can solve that designated driver issue in new orleans by just getting these from the drive through daiquiri shop and not getting out of the car. gotta love more 'tolerant' cultures ;).

Ron makes sense but if you still want something, go with a pink lemonade and champagne mix. Not strong enough to get the men/ladies bouncing off the walls but refreshing. 2:1 ratio lemonade/champagne

Geez, I thought it was bad when I was there at age 19 (that was the drinking age there in 1972) and they had free beer on tap inside the K-Mart store.

Six pack of beer
one can limeade
one can lemonade
one fith vodka
one two liter ginger ale
add ice

"Skip and go Naked" is the name I know it by. Last time I made it I put it in one of those dispensable coolers, which leaked a bit. Never noticed the dogs licking the floor below the cooler. Took them a couple of days to recover.:)

My favorite mixed drink is the "Jack Attack". To make it you need equal sized containers of Jack Daniels and Peppermint Schnapps. Pour the contents of both containers into a large pouring vessel, stirr and then repour the comingled contents back into the original containers. Store in the freezer until ready to serve. Pour over crushed ice and drink carefully.

Just another piece of advice. Make sure to label it alcoholic so the kids don't think it's regular punch and drink it! I made that mistake at a party at my uncles house when i was about 10:D

I'm leaning to wards Ron's suggestion, but if your gonna serve alcohol I'd check as to whether your responsible for those who leave drunk, and I've yet to see a wedding that someone didn't get drunk....fwiw:D

But congrats on the wedding, good luck

I was first exposed to Skip and Go Naked while visiting some friends in Minneapolis. Took me a couple days to recover too. Theirs was a little different though - equal parts beer, pink lemonade, and vodka.

For those suggesting a dry wedding....not a good plan...unless you want it to be over within the first 30 minutes:cool:

Ron Dunn

Tim, I definitely didn't say DRY ... but punches and pre-mix are about the worst type of drink to serve. People who don't actually intend to get drunk don't realise how much they are drinking.

Craig D Peltier
07-25-2008, 8:21 PM
Thanks for the ideas. It wont be a dry wedding. Its also a party afterwards and its on my folks land where alot of people are sleeping. There will be a large bonfire. We usually have one every year with more people at around same time but this times its a special day.

I like some of these ideas. I love jack but despise schnapps. That doesnt sound too good to me.
Champagne and lemonade is not a bad idea.
Sangria also.
I also like the rum type punches.
Ohh too many choices.

It will be memorable of course. Not everyone gets sloshed just those certain few ( uhumm large group).

Last time I drank something like this was in Memphis in 1979. I usually don't go good with "sweet" drinks. But a friend talked me into the place. IIRC it was Silky Sullivan's at Overton Square. I believe they were called hurricanes (may have been some other MOJO conction though) and were served in customized one gallon paint buckets. Of course everyone throughout the 6-7 hr evening had more than one bucket. I ended up losing my '69 Camaro cause I couldn't remember where I parked it. The place was so crowded that I had to park a long ways away in a residential section. Took me three days to find my car, and almost reported it stolen.
Memphis is definately on my short visit list to return to for a short vacation.
But, to add to the warnings, as coming from LOML who works for a local casino that hosts appx 5-6 weddings a week. Don't do it. As per her: Everyone gets stupid at wedding receptions with alcohol. Starts with the ladies and goes downhill from there. Bride gets PO'd at the bridesmaids for being snockered, some participants will have previously dated other participants, and God forbid that someone shows up that previously dated the bride. Then comes the drunken alligator mouth overloads the hummingbird butt syndrome which runs parallel with the Carpe Diem syndrome. Then kind of like a fourth of July show, it ends up with a grand finale of the men getting involved with a show of fisticuffing over the jealousy syndrome from the ladies improper conduct. Then of course the encore includes multiple people with the nauseated vomiting syndrome. She states that this happens at appx 85% of all weddings regardless of age group.
Not saying don't, but it would be wise to be cautious. Dang--LOML gets to see all the good stuff,:D:D:D

Craig,

You can't go wrong with "Chatham Artillery Punch", which has been responsible for creating dancing machines and drunken divas in Savannah for a very long time. There are numerous variations on the recipe on the web. Critical things to remember if you decide to serve this. Limit the servings, when it's gone, it's gone. This is a lethal, sneaky punch. Use brandied cherries, they make all the difference. Mix base as far in advance as possible, and NEVER refrigerate it. When ready to serve pour over a block of ice - this is the only acceptable way to servce CAP.

For something a little lighter you might try Bourbon Slush.

For Bernie - Bourbon Slush (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=82267&highlight=Bourbon+Slush)

Congratulations and don't forget to post pics!

2 liter of ginger ale
1/5 rum (captain morgan is really good here)
2 liters (1/2 gallon) apple cider

Another good one if you have a blender

Pecos Peach

1 gallon Peach Royale
2 gallons water
1 fifth champagne (http://www.cyber-kitchen.com/ubbs/archive/DRINKS/Alcoholic_Pecos_Peach.html#)
3/4 of a fifth Peach Schnapps
1 fifth rum plus 1/2 of another fifth rum
Ice - mix to crushed ice ala margarita style.

This can be made per serving by tossing in a few ice cubes in a blender and crushing then adding the juice.

An easy one to make on the spot is...

1/2 gallon orange (or better orange/pineapple) juice with 1/2 a fifth of vodka.

Sub other juice and it is just as yummy.

A web page like baronedrinks.com or webtender will have several hundred punch recipes. The above I have all tried and found to be very good.

Congrats

Joe

Do it like in college when we used to make "teas". Get whatever fruit juices and fruit you like, then pour in whatever amount of Everclear - Done! One of the favs was a grape concoction we labeled "Rev. Jim Jones' Jungle Juice".

Also known as "Hunch Punch" and preferably served from a plastic trash can. Wasn't the fruit the best part?! The Chatham Artillery Punch I suggested is an early version of your typical "party punch". The ladies would prepare a tea based punch for a ball or other gathering. One of the gentlemen would empty his flask into the punch bowl on the sly. Another gentleman, not realizing the punch was already spiked, would add the contents of his flask as well. And so on until you more "spike" than punch and all of the genltmen had empty flasks.

... which has been responsible for creating dancing machines and drunken divas in Savannah for a very long time.

So Belinda - is this the voice of experience we hear ??? :D

To the original question, my parents served a punch at their Wassail Bowl every year (first Sunday in December).

"Base"
2 cans whole cranberry sauce
1 package frozen strawberries
1 cup lemon juice
2 tablespoons almond extract
1 quart/liter brandy (need not be expensive)
1 quart/liter blended canadian whiskey
1 quart/liter medium‑dark rum (used to use Old Newburyport, but it's not available in Ct. anymore, so mix 3:1 Bacardi Gold to Myer's Dark)

"Mixers"
2 quarts/liters ginger ale
1 quart/liter frozen strong unsweetened tea (instant works, but brewed tastes better).

Mix the "base" the day before you plan to serve the punch. When you make the tea, it's a nice decorative touch to freeze it in some type of ring mold ‑ it looks better when you float it in the punch. If you don't have any fancy molds, any plastic container will do. You can add extra ginger ale to the punch if you wish to dilute it a bit more. The point of the tea is that, as it melts, it doesn't dilute the flavor of the punch the way straight ice would.

The above punch recipe is sneaky. When you first taste it, you know it has some serious authority. It also tastes really good and numbs the senses pretty quickly. I remember one of the wives who decided to "beat" the punch by just eating the fruit from the punch. She didn't win that one.

Mike,
I'm guessing it's a good thing that we don't have more Creeker gatherings. Heaven forbid we should all get together with our punch recipes! Seriously, the Bourbon Slush is a really good one for the summer. Of course, there are lots of other great ones listed here, but the Slush isn't on the fruity side. FYI, Bed Bath & Beyond sells a mold for making frozen shot glasses. They're wonderful, your drink gets chilled and there's nothing to throw away!

So Belinda - is this the voice of experience we hear ??? :D

LOL. . . Rob, I was born a dancing diva! (Not really, I have two and sometimes three left feet stone cold sober.) Nope, I'm the irritating woman who knows the words to every song and absolutely must share them with you. I typically take it easy at wedding receptions since it is impolite to attract more attention than the bride - which the off key singing tends to do.

As you said, back to the original question. I just thought of this one, but it isn't fruit based. We make these by the pitcher.

Midnight Specials
One part Kahlua
One part Godiva White Chocolate Liquer
One part good quality Vodka
Splash or two of Bailie's
Two parts Half & Half (even better, if you can get your hands on "ice milk" ice cream base used in restaurants)

Blend, serve over ice, or not. You can also substitute Peppermint Schnapps for the Kahlua.

This might be a good drink for the ladies as some will take one look at it, do the calorie count, and have only one drink.

Spiked watermellon is great during the summer. Take large watermellon cut small plug hole in it just big enough to fit the top of a bottle of rum or vodka, put the mouth of the bottle in upside down. After the bottle is empty put the plug back in the mellon and then into the fridge for a day or two. Cut up and sever/eat or add to punch.

Yes, we did the trash can thing. My fraternity also had a ceremonial free standing bathtub we made "tea" in. the drain hole was always stopped up with a tennis ball! We pulled it out for major parties and the pre-school "rush" week parties. The best thing was watching the unsuspecting freshman get ploughed (not that anyone did underage drinking back then!). Yes, the fruit was dangerous. It soaked up a lot of alcohol, you could get drunk just eating fruit.
