I regretably sold my Record vise a few years ago. Unfortunately Record is no longer in business (or at least no longer in the vise business). It was just the best. I presently have a Jorgensen vise, but I really miss that old Record every time I clamp something. I see that Jet now offers a vise of similar design - it has a lever that disconnects the grip for sliding open and shut - very handy. I know that's not quite answering your question, but I thought this might be of some help anyway.

Record sold their patterns to Anant Limited. Highland Woodworking distributes these vices as well as planes manufactured by Anant. I own the 10 1/2" 53ED. It is first quality.
Sorry if this is a hijack - but maybe one of these might be suitable?

Art

Brett, odds are that you will find the 7” X 9” vise too small. My Jorgensen opens up to 11” (12 ¾” without jaw inserts) and I often wish for more.

Of the three you listed, I would go with the Wilton.

i have the above vise. slightly peeved that it didn't come with any hardware (they could've at least thrown in some self tapping bolts for the bottom...), but otherwise it's fine imo.

note that any vise similar to the above design requires some cutting into your bench to mount. it's nice in that it doesn't take up any top area, but you have to mortise out a hole (similar to a hinge mortise) to set the vise in.

I have the Wilton 63155, which I bought from Amazon a copy of years ago:
93391
I see it is now sold by an Amazon merchant for about $150, quite a bit more than what I paid, and no free shipping.

It has just 4"x7" jaws, and opens to 10", but I didn't want anything larger. It suits my needs well. I especially like the fact that it doesn't have twin screws, which I find often get in the way of the workpiece, and collect shavings and sawdust. It is very sturdy, has a quick release, retractable dog and removable pivoting jaw for irregularly-shaped pieces.

I suggest you think carefully about your needs before deciding which type(s) and size(s) of bench vices to get. If you do a lot of work with planes and other hand tools you may want something different than if you mainly use power tools.

Hi all. I'm looking for some dimensions from owners of the Wilton, Jorgensen, Anant and like vises. I think they are all great performers so preference aside, I am looking for a dimension fit only. I have a clearance of about 12.5" from the bench end to the legs and end frame.

I will be installing a flush mounted vise but need one that when fully closed will fit within those 12.5 inches as I dont want to perform any frame modifications. No sense in doing so if I can get one to fit.

So the critical dimension is in the closed position from end of the screw to the rear/forward vise face joint (when fully closed). Please pretend that you dont have wood faces on the vice jaws and make that addition to the dimension.

Hope all is well with everyone! And many thanks in advance!

For the Wilton 63155, the distance from the outer face to the end of the squarish channel that encloses the screw is 14-7/8". This dimension is independent of the position of the outer face.

This is probably a gloat, but in my opinion, of all the woodworking vises I've owned or used over the years, the Emmert is the best by far. I know they're no longer made, and I happened to get lucky and in the right place, at the right time, and got mine for just the tank of gas it took to go pick it up from a closed down pattern shop. They can be found on eBay from time to time.
