I got curious about all these magical mystery products.
Mostly they are all pretty much the same.

Boeshield T9 ($16.00 a 12oz spray can) is:
hydrotreated heavy naphtha 61%
mineral oil 10%
paraffin
MSDS HERE: http://www.theruststore.com/msds/MSDS_T9_Liquid_2005.pdf
Use the MSDS to get the CAS # then look up the CAS #.

WD 40 ($3.00 for a 12oz can) is
White mineral spirits ( Stoddard solvent) - - - - - - - 45- 50%
40 Weight motor oil (CAS 64742-65-0) - - - - - - - 15-25%
Kerosene - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 12 – 18%
MSDS here: http://www.mobile-shop.com/parts/msds/P80_WD40.pdf

Felder sells Super Gleit: I'm sure they will fax an MSDS but it's not online.
However none of them seem to have any magical thing going. They all use one solvent or another and some combination of oils and maybe paraffin. WD-40 uses Kerosene to drive water away. DUH~!!

Seems to me that unless the delivery package (aerosol convenience) is what does the trick then they might not be worth the money.

Over the years I've made my own "secret formula" for a penetrating wax treatment for permanently lubricating wood drawer slides. I melt paraffin then, when the paraffin is melted I add mineral spirits till I get a not-quite-paste solution at room temperature. I suppose mineral oil might be better still. since it won't evaporate.

Maybe adding micro-crystalline waxes, a little naphtha, and deodorized kerosene and I'll have a drawer slide lube & universal metal protectant product for lots less.

Microcrystaline waxes are more adhesive and gooey than regular paraffin and might help do a better job of protecting cast iron and steel.

Cliff, of course Felder sells Super Gleit, you wouldn't expect them to sell Common Gleit would you?:D

I also am amazed at what is in (or isn't in) the aerosol cans.

I always describe WD-40 as solvent/oil mixture with imported French Garage perfume.

(If it was just plain old North American perume it wouldn't sell).

regards, Rod.

Felder sell mere common Gleit? Heaven forfend~!!

As an aside I rather suspect that there are no organic waxes that should be used on metal. All have acids in them.

WD-40 in a small size spray can sure is handy.
