I want to use tile for the top of a grill table so we can put hot stuff on it. I'm making the top out of MDO and was wondering how to adhere the top so it can standup to the elements.

I saw norm used regular thinset and grout, but I worry how that will hold up during the Chicago winter.

Marty, you want a thinset that contains latex. Home Depot carries one. Todd

Thinset is basically a light duty cement. It should stand up fine. For the grout, you might want to check out an epoxy based grout. I have never used it, but I hear it is imprenitrable. However, it has one downside. If you dont get it perfect, its very hard to corret.

I did a similar project, the tile guy suggested that I put Wonderboard over the plywood top before installing the tile, he said it would be more stable and the thinset would adhere to it better than the wood. So the top is a bit thicker than I orginally planned, but I was able to take care of it with a wider tile edging.
