Anyone have any experience with the Two Cherries burnisher? Or the Hock? Or have a burnisher that they strongly reccomend? Round vs triangle or oval?

Thanks!

An old valve rod from a car makes a nice one. Cheap, too.

I'm not much of a car mechanic --- Is that what is sometimes called a push rod?

I've not used either as a burnisher. From what I gather, an automotive valve is good because it's hard metal and solid. I don't know if people that use them as burnishers cut the head of the valve off, or use them as is. I suspect a push rod could also be used, but it's hollow inside (for oil to flow through) so maybe it would bend under the types of stress that burnishing would put on it.

I have the Hock burnisher. It is just a simple round hardened steal rod but it works great if you have good tecnique. it does have a hole drilled in it to assist you in mounting a handle if you wish. I didn't.

I have some HSS Drill Blanks I can sell you for $5 each and you can drill a file handle, I can add one for $2.00 if you dont have a lathe to make your own handle..

I sold Bob @czeckedge.com his first drill blanks as well as his first marking knife blades

I use a 1/4" solid carbide spiral router bit with the spiral end stuck in a 1"x1"x3" piece of scrap. It's smooth, hard, and cheap.

I have a CzecK Edge burnisher. Great function, feels good in the hand, visually appealing. It meets all three of my criteria for a great tool.

Joel took me up on my offer and wanted the $2.00 file handle option...

I have about 160 bf of 12/4 Bubinga that I got for a song because it has some end checking..

So I used some scrap wood where I cut off the checking and made my first wood lathe project today..

Joel's File Handle :)

Johnny,

That's really nice, especially for a "first" project.

Thanks Very Much Bob,

I have to add I have been running lathes for 40 years almost, 90% of the time metal and this was my first wood project and had a few snags with the cheapo drive center..

Just got done buying a new drive from Amazon 2 mins ago :)

My burnisher is a valve from an old Oldsmobile V8. I've been using it as is, but I suppose I'll make a handle for it someday.

Back of an old chisel, been doing it that way for years, works great. All you need is metal thats harder then the scraper, doesn't require much pressure.

Johnny,

The burnisher arrived over the weekend. It is beautiful and fits the hand perfectly. Next weekend I hope to have some time to put it to use. I am very grateful - that certainly is no file handle! If there is anything I can do for you in the future let me know.

Thank you so much,

Joel Goodman
