Here is my latest hollow form. It is made from Maple Burl and Black Walnut. The hollow form is 5 3/4" tall, 4 3/4" in diameter. The collar is 1 3/4" in diameter at it's widest and 1 1/4" at it's top. The lid is made from black walnut, maple burl and then black walnut. The lid starts at 1 1/4" in diameter and stands 3 5/8" above the hollow form. I have sanded to 4000 grit and am applying wipe on poly. I still need to add a couple more layers of poly, buff and wax and then sign. Your comments suggestions are requested and would be greatly appreciated.

That's a beautiful piece, Ken!

It's probably my eyes deceiving me, but if the form is flaring out at the bottom to the foot, you'll probably not want that to happen. Keep the curve continuous from the break to the base. But again, it could just be an illusion in the picture. This really is excellent!

Jim, the bottom 1/8" is actually tucked in slightly. I haven't gotten the photography part down yet. My pieces just don't look quite like they are actually proportioned. I tried shooting level with the piece this time to help the piece look tall. The last piece I took pictures of looked squatty compared to real life. Any suggestions for getting the shape on the computer to look like the actual piece?

Ken - this is a stunning piece! Absolutely beautiful burl, great form and finial! I can see what Jim is pointing out and believe it is an optical illusion caused by the shadows. Exceptional work Ken! Your client will be thrilled! Thanks for posting!

Funny you should mention breaking the finial. I have made 3 finials so far and have broken two of them when buffing  This piece of maple has tiger, birdseye, quilted and burl patterns all in the same piece! :D Thanks Dad for the piece of wood......you can have the left over shavings.......hehehee ;)

You have all been very kind. Does anyone have any suggestions or tips? I'm so new to this that I am having to make up my own ways to use the tools...lol I did get to see someone using a skew chisel on u-tube a couple days ago and had to laugh at the difference of how I was using it :o:o

Thanks again,

Ken
