So I was at an incredible estate sale today, see my posts in classified for items for sale. Anyway, I picked up these planes. The narrower one looks to me to be a scrub plane. The iron is thick and tapers. The mark is very hard to read, but the plane is marked Reed & Auerbach. Interestingly, a user appears to have stamped the plane "F. Uhl Austria"

The wider, looks to be a smoothing plane. Blade is mounted at 45 degrees. Neither plane has a chip breaker. They both have assymetric horns, which are really cool in the hand. This iron is also thick, tapered and bears the mark
Joh Weiss & Sohn, Wien

Images are attached. Any info on origin, age, value, function? Thanks.

Ken,

these are Austrian planes made by "Joh. Weiss & Sohn (son)" in Vienna/Austria. The narrow plane is a scrub plane and the wide one a jack plane (called "Schlichthobel" in German). Look here for more information (pictures of planes and trademarks) about Weiss:

http://www.holzwerken.de/museum/hersteller/weiss.phtml

And here's some company history in English:

Your trademark has been registered in 1897. The planes may have been made around 1900-1920. Weiss made and exported a lot of planes and they are quite common.

Danke, Wolfgang. Great info. Wish I could read [and understand] German.

I forgot to say that part I of the Joh. Weiss 1909 catalog reprint can be found online:

http://www.handplane.com/joh-weiss-sohn-1909-catalog-part-i

Ken's planes are No. 1 and 2 on the first page.

My son showed me how to translate the page into English:

http://www.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.holzwerken.de%2Fmuseu m%2Fhersteller%2Fweiss.phtml&hl=en&ie=UTF8&sl=auto&tl=en

Thanks again Wolfgang.
