Hi Everyone,

I have a project that requires a very specific size of staple, and there's the rub. I need to shoot many thousands of staples, so buying a dedicated stapler for this project is not a problem

My needs are rather unusual in that I need it to fire a staple that has a gap/measurement of 0.250" +/- 0.005" BETWEEN the legs!

Anyone know if anyone makes such a beast? And ideally with stainless steel staples to boot as it is an outdoor project.

Thanx,

Brian

Find the staples first then find the gun to shoot the staples.

Brian, I have the Porter Cable Narrow Crown Stapler (NS100A). It's designed to shoot 18 gauge staples with a 1/4" crown ranging in length from 1/2 to 1 inch long.

1/4" crown staples are pretty standard and you should be able to find them in stainless.

Incidentally, the measurement from outside to outside on the legs is just shy of 3/8". Inside is 1/4" though.

A quick Amazon search reveals the NS100A at $92 and Senco L11BGA 18 gauge by 1/4-inch crown by 3/4-inch leg stainless steel staples (5,000/box) for $65.

Be well,

Doc

Thank you both for your replies.

Rick,

I have done this and only found 1/4" and 1/2" crown staples - too narrow and too wide respectively. Using a value of 0.049" for the thickness of the legs (nominal 18 ga) the inside width of a 1/4" crown staple works out to 0.152"; for 1/2" crown it would be 0.402". A 3/8" crown stapler, if one exists, would be close at .277".

I've been wondering if any of the metric guns in Europe might work out to the right size. Festool probably makes exactly what I want - at $78,000 for the gun and 42c per staple!

Don,

According to the Porter-Cable website, and the stainless steel fastener site suggested by Rick, the NS100A shoots a crown staple that measures 1/4" to the "outside" of the legs, not the inside (see attached).

Wow,

Right after posting the above, I googled "3/8" crown staples" and came up with a ton of hits. Apparently, that's a standard size in the upholstery industry. Who knew.

Unfortunately, most of the staples are very fine gauge - 19 or 22 - which would leave too great of a gap between the legs.

Oh well, at least there's still hope.

Brian, PC has a 3/8" crown nailer (http://www.coastaltool.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/a/port/us58.htm?L+coastest+wvvt8923ff0e0d0e+1215563038), but the fasteners may be lightweight given it's intended for upholstery work, etc. They are 22 gage "fine wire" staples.

There is also a 7/16" crown format, but it appears to be focused on construction needs. (http://www.coastaltool.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/senco/sns41.htm?L+coastest+wvvt8923ff0e0d0e+1215563038)

Brian, the measurement I posted above was with a steel rule...didn't seem right after what was posted afterwards, so I just took a set of digital calipers to my staples. They are all consistent:

5/32 from inside to inside
15/64 outside (measured at top "crown")
1/32 each leg

(Yes, I know they don't add up, but those are the measurements)

I measured several batches in varying lengths and they are all the same.

Be well,

Doc

Like any tool, you generally get what you pay for. We sold pneumatic tools for years and the only once that was consistently purchased by the pros was Senco. Even Senco has different models of staplers though so be sure to check the details on the tool. Some are fine for softwood, others are fine for both hard and softwood. They also sell stainless staples. Their website is very well detailed.
