All,

I have always been a huge fan of the Olympics (summer or winter) and I am opening this off topic thread for folks to post US Olympic comments... good or bad!

I, for one, can't wait for 8-80-08!

Any comments on the trials are welcome as well!

Personally I wouldn't miss them. It's just like professional sports, the biggest richest countries get the most medals. Now that professional athletes can compete I dislike it even more. Also with Network TV you have to watch the events they want to show. Just my opinion, not trying to start a argument.

This isn't the case for the non-Olympic weeks? Given that I can give up about 3 hrs/night, I like the fact that they give us the Reader's digest version and skip over the sports that really are kinda boring to sit and watch.

I used to really enjoy watching the olympics. I started getting a bad taste about it when Jimmy Carter did not allow US athletes to attend the Moscow games. It really politicized the games. I really felt sorry for the athletes who were denied their possibly one shot at participating. It has, like so many things, become all about the money. In so many cases, it is not about the team achievement. It's more about me and what I'm going to get as a result of participating. I have a tendency to root for the underdog in many events. Even though I like to see US competitors do well, I really like to see athletes from small countries do well too.

I like watching the events, I can't stand the talking heads constantly saying that the US contender will likely win the gold and then changing their story after they don't and the too numerous "up close and personal" interviews on every contestant they can get in front of a camera.

I say more sports, less fluff.

They do seem to find a story on all of them. Some of the stories are great and some so-so. I bet they could find one on me if I went. Everyone has a story.

I still love the Olympics though.

I agree, and that's why we started watching it on CBC out of Vancouver, BC.
Much more sports, and the interviews/stories on athletes are more evenly spread among countries and they are shorter. I remember when we bought our first brand new color TV (19") back in the '70s it was timed for watching the Olympics.

You could be the first Command Senior Chief to compete. That ought to be good for at least 15 minutes of air time! What event would you enter?

I pretty much lost interest in the Olympics when (1) they dropped just about all pretense of the athletes being amateurs and (2) they turned womens' gymnastics into borderline kiddie-porn.

Seriously, when did you last see an actual grown woman competing in Olympic gymnastics? And who thought it was a good idea to turn the NBA All-Star Game into a round-robin tournament?

At this point (paraphrasing Mark Cuban), the whole thing has nothing to do with athleticism and national pride, and everything to do with selling shoes.

Well, since they don't have competitions for woodworking, the mastery of the 8 minute mile, real estate investing, Naval leadership, Electronic Warfare, or humming bird watching... I am unfortunately a wash.:(

Maybe it's this particular group, more than the general population, that's not into the Olympics. But, here the Seattle area decided not to try for a future Olympic host bid, due mainly to not only lack of corporate interest but also opposition from residents, especially commuters already suffering from nasty traffic. Recently I have heard people talk about watching this year because it's in China and it could be like watching a train wreck, with the many potential problems.

I for one Love the Olympic spirit. I love watching the games both Summer and Winter. It is cool to see US competitors do good but overall I like watching the competition and seeing people step it up during the big competition. There are a lot of sports in the olympics other than basketball. I do wish the coverage was a bit more towards all the sports and not only women's gymnastics and swimming in the summer and skating in the winter. I like watching kayaking and some of the other obscure sports which you can never see other than the olympics.

I am in a conundrum right now though because my dvr is loaded with new yankee workshop and woodworks but I want to make room for the olympics.

Keep the spirit up. The olympics shouldn't be political it should be about the athletes and the competition. No matter what other's make it out to be I try to remember what it is supposed to be about.

One of the things I liked most about the Olympics was that it was a community event. Everyone watched and could talk about it the next day. In that way, it banded the country together and we felt like we were all on the same team.

I think I remember that during the last Olympics, American Idol got better ratings.

At our house, we have almost stopped watching TV. We just decided that it added more bad things to our life than good things. We still watch Illini Basketball and if there are tornadoes, we watch the weather maps and I had thought that we would probably watch the Olympics. At this point, I don't think we will though.

I love watching the summer Olympics. Watched the swim trials this weekend with my 4 yr old daughter on TV. SHe is just learning to swim and thought it was great. It was amazing watching the 41 year old lady win two events to go to her 4th Olynmpics. She is unbelievable.

I'm a fan of idea of the olympics and I've actually known a few olympians.

One lady, Sharon Hansen-Lowery, was in the 1996 Olympics in the heptathlon. She was friend of my wife, Barb, who was dealing with breast cancer during that time. At my wifes funeral she said something I never will forget..."For some reason people look up to athletes as heros...we are no hero's... Barb, and women like her are my heros..."

Yes there are some amazing people who compete and uphold the true meaning of the Olympics. Those are the ones who I route for.

I'm a huge fan of the Olympics, summer and winter. We will watch as much as we possibly can every time they come around. My 7 yr old has even started asking when they will be on again. I watch the usual mainstream sports, but what I really love are those events you only see every 4 years - like pole vault, or bobsledding. I have some magical memories of the Olympics, the biggest of which would have to be the "Miracle on Ice" in 1980 at Lake Placid. Awe inspiring stuff. I'm with you Dewey, bring it on.

I vividly remember watching my first Olympics when it was in Munich, Germany. I thought it was way cool: the parades, the award ceremonies, the ABC guys in their gold, polyester jackets. Then the regular coverage stopped and turned to guerillas taking over one of the athlete dorms. As I recall, I had just seen Planet of the Apes at the drive-in and this whole thing "guerilla" thing had me a bit scared.

Anyway, there are still some great Olympic moments, but I'm disappointed in the TV coverage over the years. It's 25 minutes of background stories then 25 seconds of actual competition; on tape delay. It's like a bunch of executives are more interested in creating cereal box models than simply showing athletes at their best. I still like watching events where there aren't any judges who decide who wins.

Since there's never been an Olympics in China before, I have high hopes for 2008.

If anyone knows of where a good TV schedule is please let me know or post it here.

Greg,
Follow my NBC link at the top of this thread. There is a TV/Online listings tab that will ask you what your zip code and cable provider are. Once you type that in, it will list all the events and every channel that they are on w/your provider... not just NBC which is way cool:cool:

I think a lot of people are burned on the Olympics due to the coverage. I find a lot of it to be so America-centric and having little to do with the actual competition that it is hard to take. I cannot stand it when they cover a medal ceremony when they didn't cover the event.

I used to live in Michigan, where we could get the CBC, and I have to agree -- it was far superior coverage. You saw more and different sports, not just ones that were the love of the American corporate sponsors. Personally, I can do without so much gymnastics and basketball.

Personally, I want to see how the Aussies do in the swimming (can't help it -- my parents are Aussies). They've always been a swimming powerhouse. And I always cheer when I see an Aussie competing.

Oh, and for those who might feel cynical about all the big countries getting all the medals -- recompute the medal counts per capita. It is actually really interesting. The big countries don't do nearly so well, and New Zealand starts to really haul a__ (gotta watch out for those Kiwis).

Hopefully there will be some good events televised.

Cheers,

Chris

I think a lot of people are burned on the Olympics due to the coverage. I find a lot of it to be so America-centric

I would have to agree that this is part of why folks are ticked off. Some have already posted to this thread and stated complaints about the coverage. I left the tempo of this thread (good or BAD) to the fans, or in this case not so much fans. The response thus far has been more negative than positive which I hope will change after they get underway on Friday. (maybe not... and that's fine too)

As for the quote above, I know from experience that you set yourself up for failure trying to please everyone. If you shoot for 70% and get it be very happy because in most cases the other 3 out of ten will find something to complain about. American's want to see those events and there is only so much air time so they go with the ratings which are a true reflection of what we American's want to see. The big networks didn't get where they are today without saturating us with tons of commercials and following the ratings. (Thank God, TIVO helps with the commercials)

I, personally, wouldn't mind watching Badminton (http://www.nbcolympics.com/badminton/index.html) and Handball (http://www.nbcolympics.com/tv_and_online_listings/zone=MT/day=0/sport=HB/online.html), but when pitted against cycling and fencing for example, I know what the networks will tend to air. This is my first Olympics where I am not deployed and I have TIVO so I may be able to catch some of the offbeat sports at odd times in the day and I am looking forward to it.

I don't hate it when other countries rake in Medals. I do hope we beat out China though! As for the Aussies, I hope they do well also!

Recently I have heard people talk about watching this year because it's in China and it could be like watching a train wreck, with the many potential problems.

I, too, lost interest in the Olympics years ago. Not to politicize the Olympics or your post Dewey, but what Joe said holds true around here as well. When the "official rules" were released last week I decided there is great potential here for lots of "drama". Let's see, "no one with a mental illness or a sexually transmitted disease may attend". Hmmm . . . don't think you could get away with that in the States. "No gatherings which may be harmful to the national interests". That's a pretty broad one right there. Tibet will be closed to foreigners. The games that will be played out outside of the Olympics may be more interesting viewing this time around.

I plan to watch the opening ceremonies this Friday night. FYI, some schedules published 8PM and 7PM Central/Mountain. It actually starts at 7:30/6:30 Central. Although, I hope NBC didn't decide to just shove in a half-hour of commercials and commentary before the ceremonies actually begin.

I just got my Hi-Def TV online again after working on my house. Last night I dialed in the NBC evening news and the picture was amazing! I'm wondering if NBC has done some tweaking for the Olympics coverage. If so, the picture will be good even if the coverage isn't. ;)

I kinda started to lose interest after the US beat the Russians in hockey, that was truly a great game.
And the fact the team was made up of a lot of Minnesotians didn't hurt either...:)

After that it got to be one pro team against another, whether it was gymnastics, hockey or almost any of the other games.

China having the games is a farce, lets see, lets have athletes compete where the airs so bad you can't hardly breathe and kicks people out of their home to build a starbucks.??

Sorry, used to enjoy them, not so much anymore, I'd rather watch the food network or the history channel now.

I hope those who watch enjoy, but I'll catch a few of the highlights and wish the US well.

Lee I agree with you 100%....The NBA and MLB have destroyed the spirit of the Olympics...This is not to be about world class pro athletes it is suppose to be amateurs striving to do their best for their country. The only reason the USA does not win the gold in ice hockey in the winter Olympics is because the Russian and Sweed players that play in the NHL have to play for their "home" country even though they make millions in America playing in the NHL right here in the good ol' USA.

I'm with you Dewey. I'm very excited the Olympics are here, and plan to watch tons of it.

I'm not into the team events that already have their own seasons, like basketball, etc, especially since they are all pros anyway, but I do like the other team events and all the single events. One gripe I've had is that they never show enough of the decathalon, which to me is the heart of the Olympics.

I'm not really sure why people here are fixated on those few events where we have pros, when 95% of the Olympics has nothing to do with that. Of course the coverage may over represent that part of it I guess.

Joe Pelonio

We normally do watch the opening and closing ceremonies, just to see what the host country considers entertaining for the world. Some have been better than others but the one thing I like to see is the excited faces of the athletes as they march in with their flags. You have to admit that for the most part they have worked hard for years to reach the goal and really enjoy that entrance.

Mind, you, tomorrow at 5pm is the first pre-season football game for the Seahawks so I'd guess that more TVs around here will be tuned to that.

I don't know why they think there has to be a US competitor for them to show it. I would watch the decathalon even if the US had no one competing.

I'm actually trying to figure out if there is some way I could watch that and some other less shown sports, but it's kind of confusing trying to figure it out. Someday I'll be able to just pick the sports I want and all the coverage for them will just appear in my DVR :).

I love the Olympics, but I despise the television coverage of the Olympics. I really wish they would show MORE of the so called "boring" events. I mean if you have an athlete who has spent 12 years perfecting their discus toss, are they any less deserving of TV coverage than the athlete who is a 100 yard dash runner? There are tons of Olympic sports that I would love to watch but that just aren't popular enough to get on television. What I would love to see is complete video recording of absolutely EVERY SINGLE EVENT BY EVERY ATHLETE. Of course, you could not watch all of this in real time, because there are dozens of simultaneous events, but it could be broadcast on a special channel just for Olympics coverage long after the Olympics have completed. I just have a lot of respect for the personal sacrifices that most of these athletes have made in order to become the best in the world at something, with very little chance of compensation in return (look, I know that the US Basketball team doesn't really fit that group, but one bad sport doesn't spoil the whole Olympics for me. Think of the badminton players for goodness sakes!) I think all of the Olympic competitors deserve to have their performances broadcast to the world, regardless of the popularity of their sport or what country they represent. I would TiVo every last minute and spend the 4 years between the Olympics watching all of it.

I think more people would watch if the viewing was interactive. I wuld like to be on my computer and using my mouse to walk thru the Olympic/city village stoping into an event and watching for awhile, and then wandering to the next event. Problem with TV is just when you might get interested in an event they move on to something else....mostly commercials and fluff pieces.

Peter, we might be in luck. A friend of mine told me yesterday that NBC is going to record every single event and you can stream them over the internet. I think you will even be able to schedule and record them. I'm going to look into this and I will post back with more info if it looks promising.

I don't know if you can really get every event, but here is the link:

If it's covered, and if I can figure out when to watch, I'll probably tune in for the Women's Powerlifting since one of Savannah's own - Cheryl Haworth - is competing. I checked the event schedule but couldn't find a listing for the event. Go Cheryl!!!

Ok well I am a certified olympic junkie right now....Just watched the 4x100 mens swimming relay. I think all 8 final teams beat the world record which was set before the games and the US team beat the world record by 4 seconds. All I can say is Wow to all the teams. The french certinally gave some really tough competition.

Now i just need to get setup on a computer to be able to watch the sailing.

Yeah, you can really can get anything, and I mean anything! I watched some air rifle, judo, handball, all kinds of stuff that doesn't get on TV, and a lot of these were the preliminary rounds, not the finals. And you don't have to watch it live, you can go back and watch anything that has been recorded. They also have good info on how each of the sports are scored/judged on their websites. I've been pretty impressed with the quality of the video and the overall presentation on the website. If I could just get all of this stuff downloaded to my TiVo that would be great. Then I could watch Olympic events for the next 6 months or so...

Actually, the US set a new WR in the prelims race. Then, in the finals, 5 teams beat that, with the US having a winning time of almost 4 seconds faster.

What a race though. Extra exciting!

Opening ceremonies plus all the great events this weekend. We are even holing our own in the medal count.
Disappointing first round of men’s volleyball, but hey, how about that swim team!
Thank goodness for TIVO as I think there are as many commercials as sports coverage. Also I was able to continue progress on my landscape project and still see the Olympics (BONUS)

I'm "officially" glued to the set and the 'net when at work with everything I can dig up on the olympics. It'll be 2+ weeks of groggily biking into work. This midnight stuff is tough out here on the left coast. :)

This is a good site, too:

http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/Schedule/index.shtml Just about everything on every page is clickable and leads to other cool stuff.

That stinks that it is midnight out there Our Olympics coverage on the east coast ends at midnight (maybe it goes to 3am and I've just never stayed up long enough). If i was still in Mtn View, I would expect to able to watch it live till 9pm.

Beats the World Cup in Japan/Korea though when I would come home from work, sleep, wake up in time for the 11 PM (Pacific) game, maybe nap if the 2 AM game was boring, then watch the 4 AM game, trudge to CalTrain and be at work by 8.

I'd watch on Univision or Telemundo and they didn't have a delay like ESPN--so I'd see a goal at say 3:30 AM and the annoucers would yell "Goooooaaaaaal" and the poor guy in the apt next to me (watching ESPN) would see it a few seconds later.

Well, stating as a nay sayer I have to admit the wife and I are enjoying what we've seen so far, womens volleyball (wife made me watch with my eyes closed) swiming and some gymnastics, we'll continued to catch some of it, but them late nights get tough the next morning.
