I finally got the time to complete this futon project.

I followed plans I got at Rockler. The futon is almost all true 1" thick wood. I used all rough sawn 5/4 red oak. I was able to test out many of my tools in the garage/shop, but by far, due to so many slats being the same dimensions, I was able to take advantage ripping and gang cutting these on my Eurekazone PBB (Power Bench Bridge). I used my cabinet saw for the long rails.
The photos were taken before I finished it. Today I finish sprayed it with lacquer. In the past I would have used my air compressor and my Harbor Freight 43430, but, a couple of weeks ago I found a deal on a 4-stage HVLP Titan turbine system. I was a little hesitant to buy it since I was satisfied with the 43430 results. I was shocked how much better this turbine system atomized the finish. I'm not too hot on gloss finishes, but, that's what my wife wanted for this project. The photos below show the results :
