I finally got the time to complete this futon project.

I followed plans I got at Rockler. The futon is almost all true 1" thick wood. I used all rough sawn 5/4 red oak. I was able to test out many of my tools in the garage/shop, but by far, due to so many slats being the same dimensions, I was able to take advantage ripping and gang cutting these on my Eurekazone PBB (Power Bench Bridge). I used my cabinet saw for the long rails.

The photos were taken before I finished it. Today I finish sprayed it with lacquer. In the past I would have used my air compressor and my Harbor Freight 43430, but, a couple of weeks ago I found a deal on a 4-stage HVLP Titan turbine system. I was a little hesitant to buy it since I was satisfied with the 43430 results. I was shocked how much better this turbine system atomized the finish. I'm not too hot on gloss finishes, but, that's what my wife wanted for this project. The photos below show the results :

Hey Mike, That sure looks fine. ( by the way I'm not to keen on gloss finishes either ). I have a question for you. Are you going to have the cushions made locally or can you order them over the net. The reason I ask is, I get many inquiries from my websites asking if I build futons. I have no one locally that I can have cushions made, unless I could have a passing deer or bear trained. If you have someone that you trust over the web, could you post a link. Again, a very fine job, Reed

Looks terrific Mike. I would like to do one but low on my wife's priority list at this point.

Well done...

Thanks for the comments - Reed, I purchased the mattress at one of several corner mattress stores around my house. Check them out because some are just foam and others are built like a real mattress.
