Hi all,
I'm converting a kitchen island I salvaged from our recent remodel into my new workbench.
Butcher block top 60x30, with plenty of drawer and full extension pullout shelves, and I'll be adding face and tail vises.
I want to make it mobile and would like suggestions. I'm concerned about adding castors directly to the case, unless I strengthen the sides of the case.
Would I be better off placing the whole unit onto a mobile base? The bottom of the case measures about 54x24.
Hope I'm making myself clear.
Thanks

I'd put it on a mobile base.

Wood magazine has a nice plan for a mobile platform. I like it because it positions the casters in line instead of under the 1x4 frame. This gives strength without adding too much height.

You might also consider purchasing a mobile base. HTC is having a clearance sale. Might one of those bases serve your needs?

I don't know how much the island from your kitchen weighs and how it is designed. A couple of yrs ago Norm designed a new mobile workbench (well he took the design from the PBS design studio, but its design and how the casters work are realy cool. Go to NYW webpage I'm sure you can find a photo there.
