View Full Version : after epoxy on paddle

I'm finishing a wooden bent shaft canoe paddle for a friend and going to be using a low viscosity epoxy with a layer of fiberglass over the blade for abrasion resistance. My question is what to put on for a final coat. I've read epoxy needs UV protection. I am also trying to be a bit frugal as I've got enough time and resources into this thing already. I've heard good things about two part polyurethanes. Anybody recommend them? Can anyone recommend anything less expensive?
The finish needs to be durable as my friend works as a guide in the Boundary Waters and this paddle is going to take a beating.

Thanks in advance.

Go to a marine supply store. They will have both a exterior non-poly varnish as well as two part polyurethane finishes.

I don't have any personal knowledge in this area, but remember reading a caution in the System Three materials that some varnishes are not compatible for use over epoxy, and what to look for. I don't remember if it was in their on-line FAQ page or in their The Epoxy Book.
