I just received my Monster Hollowing rig from Randy Privett :D. It's really well made, but I do have a question.

Randy leaves his cutters at full length so the turner can trim it to size. What's the best way to cut them safely?

Thanks in advance.

I posted a similar question on the General Woodworking forum. What I did was grip the cutter in a vise grip and clamped it to my workbench. I cut the cutter with a small cut off wheel in a drill. Was not a very elegant cut but it worked.

If you go this route make sure the area on the floor is clear of debris because the cut end will sneak away and hide.

You can buy cut off wheels at any box store or Harbor Freight.

John I use my grinder to cut a groove and clamp in a vice then snap into.

John - I used the same method as Bernie and it works great.

Congrats on your new hollowing system! Looking forward to seeing some of your work real soon!

I've got to try Bernie and Steve's method. I'm wearing down my cutter. Lucky me, there's a shop nearby that has the cutters for next to nothing.
