Hello folks. Has anyone had a problem with 1/4" bits in the Hitachi MV12? I have tried multiple 1/4 bits and also using a rubber O-ring so the bit does not bottom out but I still get bits slipping and even stopping!

Any advice is appreciated.

Does Hitachi make a collet for the MV12 that only accepts 1/4 bits? If so, where can I get one? I have been to the Hitachi website and I hate to be negative but the website is pretty uselsess.

Thanks, Bill

You might try another sleeve. I have never had a 1/4" bit slip in mine. I have two or three different sleeves and they all work fine in the M12V, TR12, PC7518, Bosch 90300, and PC690.

Thanks, Mike. Where can I buy a new sleeve? I would prefer an on-line retailer....thanks, Bill

Thanks again Mike. Have you used either one with the Hitachi MV12? Thanks, Bill

When you use a sleeve insert to reduce a collet from 1/2" to 1/4" (or some other size as appropriate) it's very important that the slit in the insert lines up with one of the slits in the collet. If you don't do this, it's amost a given that it will slip. That said, a true collet in the size you need would be preferable, especially if you need to use that size a lot.

I have the Hitachi M12V, and the Hitachi collet to run 1/4" bits. Works pretty good, and it will probably work even better now that I'll use Jim Becker's tip in the future! Thanks Jim!

I have the M12V and had the same problem until I posted the same question. The reply was the same as Jim's. Line up the slit in the two collets,no problems now.

Thanks folks. I already knew about lining up the slots of the sleeve with the collet. I still have the slipping issue. I did get another tip from John over at Woodshop Demos. John says to leave the sleeve out by 1/8" from the collet. I think this makes sense and is definitely worth a try.

Thanks again. Bill

Bill,

Make sure that the open slot in the sleeve lines up with the open slot in the collet . If it is not aligned this way, the sleeve will not tighten properly on the bit.

Bill one of the sleeves I have looks like the one in the PC and Woodcraft pictures and yes I have used it in the M12V. It was my primary router until 3 years ago when I got the PC. I would also question using a 1/4" bit that has slipped because it may have fatigue issues.

Folks
Can I look at the problem from the other side of the issue?
Are the 1/4 inch router bits really 1/4 diameter?
Are the router bits "cheap" or "expensive"?
Now ask me about slipping router bits.
Apply all the answers presented above.

Best regards
