I roughed out these bowls in March, and just finished them recently. Boy does Sycamore move a LOT. What a PITA! Also, it seemed extremely difficult to cut cleanly, resulting in bad tearout even with a very sharp gouge and light cuts.

The first is about 10" wide, finished with Behlen's salad bowl finish.

Here is the second bowl, also finished with Behlen's salad bowl finish.

I gave this to my dad for Father's day, as he saw it being turned and really liked the pattern. It is for his desk at work, for change & loose stuff, but will probably be used for candy! (he is a pediatrician).

Good looking bowls Nathan! The spalting really makes the bowls unique! I am sure your Dad's bowl gets lots of attention at work - especially if it is filled with candy!

Thanks folks for the compliments!

Robert, as for the good attitude, that may change. I have about 10 more roughouts that I turned in early march, that are dry now. I'm in no rush to finish them!!:D:rolleyes: The wood is gorgeous, but in the time that it took just to do finish cuts and sand, the stupid things were warped from round enough to not sit perfectly flat!!! I won't be in any rush to score any more in the future. I have some lumber that I milled from the same logs that should make some very nice panels for cabinet doors in the future, though.

Awesome spalting
Your Dad will be very proud of his sons talent.
I like Steve's idea of a giant candy bowl!!
