Here is a small router plane I made based on a Popular Woodworking Magazine design. I used Southern Yellow Pine after reading the book by Christopher Schwarz on workbenches. If it's hard enough for a workbench why not a router plane? We will see how it holds up.

That looks pretty cool. Can you tell me what issue that was from?

I made the identical plane out of ash. got the cutters from Stanley. Grinding down an allen wrench for cutters may be a great idea but I lack the patience and skills. Plane works great and was very satisfying to make.

Nice. How is the Allen wrench secured? Did you have to heat treat it?

The router plane was in the August 2005 issue of Popular Woodworking magazine. It is the issue with Norm on the cover.

The pic's below will show how it is done. Very simple. I did not heat treat the wrench. That should not be needed. The wrench in the photo has not been shaped yet. The Key is held with just a hole drilled in a thumb screw.

Nicely done Dave!

I built one of my own recently, and I mention it here as my blade holding system is different - I believe much easier. This one is a tad larger than the #271.

There is a tutorial to build it on my website:
