I am new to green woodcarving and am trying to find the best tool for collecting wood to make spoons and walking sticks. My choices appear to be bow saw, folding saw, or pruning saw (straight or curved). Any suggestions?

I would use a bow saw and a curved prining saw. Are you planning to dry the wood prior to carving and if so how and for how long?

Thanks,

For spoons, I do not intend to dry the wood at all until after the spoon has been rough carved. I was then going to coat it in petracyl and let it sit for a few months before finishing it.

In "Stickmaking," Andrew Jones and Clive Jones indicate that walking sticks need to be completely dry before carving and suggest at least a year. I'm not sure I can wait that long, but I do intent to coat the ends with Petracyl and wait at least a few months.

How long do you think the curved pruning saw needs to be for a 6" diameter branch? My instinct is to use a larger saw to make the cutting easier, but 13" seemed excessive.
