This is a dog I carved in mahogany. By making the head and eyes over-sized in proportion to the body I hoped to give him that attentive "When are we going for a walk?" look.

very nice work. what kind of finish did you use?

Daniel: The carving is made from Honduran mahogany.

Scott: To paraphrase the notice seen in the credits at the end of some movies, "No animals were harmed during the making of this carving." :D

John: I used Watco Danish oil. I have a small tub slightly longer than the carving (the dog is 12" long) that I fill with a few inches of Watco. I place the carving in it and give it a good soaking for about 20 minutes. I let it dry for a day or two then wet sand it using 600 wet/dry sandpaper using Watco as the lubricant. Let it dry and then apply paste wax. I've found that if you are going to use paste wax on a dark, open-pored wood use a wax that has a tint that matches the wood otherwise you'll end up with white specks in the pores that are very difficult to buff out. Wet sanding with the finish should close most of the pores but I've never been able to close them all and they eventually fill with paste wax.

Very nice. He looks pitiful, but still youthful.

Daniel,

You did a beautiful job. I love the way you did the eyes--very soulful.

Haven't done much carving - yet - but it seems that the key elements in life forms are the ears and eyes and you nailed them both! The ears hang/drape very well, and the eyes have feeling - a difficult task for a carving. Extremely well done.

Excellent job, love the expression on the dog's face. Looks like a dachshund to me not a bassett. Which one is it?
