Yep - With a very sharp blade, you can plane very curly maple with no tearout whatsoever leaving a smooth polished surface. It is a little harder to push, but on a smoother you are only going to be taking about one-thou shavings anyway. Your blade will need to be sharpened more often as it does seem to dull a bit faster at this higher angle, but I still had a primary bevel of 25* where you could probably increase it significantly and see an improvement on edge retention. I highly recommend it.

I ran across a web-page that showed that in the area of 35 degrees the A2 blades have way better edge retention. Unfortunately i lost the bookmark.
