I saw a picture of something like this and figured I'd give it a try. Not my favorite turning but one that has sold faster than most.

Nice Bowl. What type of wood is that? It has a lot of character and really makes the piece stand out.

That is nice. I bet that was hard to make the square was hard to make look even through out.

Greg,
I got two of these blocks at Woodcraft for like a 1.50 each. They were in a huge shipping box and just marked spalted maple. I was thinking about cutting them up for pen blanks but never used them. Have you got your pen yet?

Wonderful piece. I kind of like turning these. I get some strange sounds coming off those corners as they spin. Two suggestions for you. 1) Try to make the curve above the square match the curve below so that it looks like the bowl is stuck in this square piece of wood. 2) Bill grumbine even suggests that you make the square part the same thickness as the bowl itself. These two idea may make the next one even more valuable and pleasing to the eye. Sure wish you knew what the wood is. It is great looking stuff.

Looks good. Appears to me to be Ambrosia Maple, based on some of the streaks.
