Greetings,

A friend of mine laser engraves wooden box tops for his business. He had a stack of lids that he had screwed up and asked me if I could replane them and refinish for him.

The boxes are stained with a topcoat that I thought was a satin poly finish. I had no problem matching the stain and applied a light coat of Deft satin finish.

They came out pretty good and all was well....until he got ready to engrave them again.

It seems that the contact paper that is used for the engraving is peeling off the top coat when it is removed.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should be using for the finish?

Thank you,

Glenn

What exactly did you use to stain the covers?

If you applied Deft lacquer over an oil based finish, that may explain the problem. It's never a good idea to mix finishes. You can very easily end up with adhesion problems.

How long did you let the stain dry? How long had the clear coat had to cure? How aggressive is the adhesive on the contact paper?
