Howdy,

I did not see an introduction area, so thought I'd post here. I've been lurking for a few weeks no, so thought I would de-lurk. This is an excellent forum. I run a music related internet forum, much smaller than Saw Creek, and so I can really appreciate the time and effort that has gone into this forum... especially the degree to which it is kept on such a civil basis - I congratulate the administrators and moderators! (and you have my deepest sympathy too - haha...)

In any case, I've been a woodworker off and on for about 35 years, my degree is in Industrial Arts (taught public school one year, but started having kids and a need for more lucrative work, so ended up as an Operations Director for a private non-profit, looking after the computer network and physical plant). I've made furniture, turned wood and built musical instruments - mostly acoustic guitars, but a few ukuleles and mandolins. My current woodworking interest is building Arts & Crafts furniture, the kids are gone, and the spouse and I are going to get a little more serious about fixing up our 1917 bungalow house in its original style. Even though I have too many projects going -- I'll probably join he mission chair communal build. FYI, the creek has already cost me a fortune :p - I've ordered lumber from Mike Mrogan, and taken advantage of clamp and saw blade deals and the LOML may find my hidden stash of purchases soon! ;)

Looking forward to getting to know some of you folks. Thanks for a great forum.

Welcome to the 'Creek" John. Oh, btw, don't worry about posting pics of your work. You can be like me and never post any so these guys & gals can't make fun of me. :D ;) :p

Thanks for the welcome guys and gal.

Brad, I'm used to being made fun of -- I've got kids. ;)

Clara, since you mentioned Ukulele and pictures in the same sentence - here are some Uke pics. I cannot take credit for the box, however the box is solid cedar and the top is thinned and braced like a conventional uke. It features a three piece mahogany neck, and an "undulating" cherry/maple/walnut fretboard and headplate. It sounds good too. :D

Cheers,
John

Welcome John. Nice ukulele. Fellow bungalow owner here, though not arts and crafts style. Enjoy the creek.

Welcome John. I'm sure your experience will make SMC even richer yet.

I'm starting to make Arts & Crafts furniture too. (see WW Projects Forum for the nightstand) But I'm on the other end of the spectrum of life. I'm getting as much done as possible before having kids. I expect I'll have to slow down a bunch for 20 years or so, and then come back with a post just like yours. ;)

Welcome, John. I think you will find this about as civil and freindly a place as there is on the internet, and there's a wealth of knowledge and experience here.

I was stationed at Bliss for a couple of years in the late 60s and fell in love with El Paso. I'd like to return some day. I imagine it has changed a lot since I was last there.

Thanks again fellars, this seems like a very friendly place.

Gary, I'd tell you my favorite banjo joke -- but then we would risk getting the ball rolling --- and might never get it stopped! ;)

Jeremy, I remember checking out your night stand, very nice - a couple are on my list to do. And you are smart to get it going pre kids. :)

Hank, El Paso has changed a bunch, but Juarez even more.... where the population is estimated at close to 2 million. El Paso is still a great place, so hope you make it back.

Anyway, we better get back to woodworking!

Cheers,
John

Welcome, John. That's a beautiful ukulele--very interesting design and coloring. Can you play and sing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocYvf7J5dR8&feature=related)

Thanks Cary. It's based on a 1920's Kamaka Uke - which today are worth considerably more than my version. ;)

That's a nice tribute to bruddah IZ- I can play the chords to Somewhere... but only wish I could sing like bruddah IZ. (Western Swing and 50's rock and roll is the stuff I can currently sing). Thanks for posting the link - I may need to pick up a CD! :)
