We just got a dowel machine and made the heads for 1/4 , 1/2 , 3/4, 1" and 1 1/2 inch.

I dont have any experience in what the customer expects. They come out of the machine very smooth but does the customer do the final sanding or does the manufacturer ?¿

If I were purchasing dowels retail I'd expect 'em finished to size.

If it's a commercial customer I imagine there'd be specs including the finish & tolerance.

This is really my question. Probably the easiest way to put it is what grit of sandpaper would be acceptable ? Some species as bloodwood come out as if they are polished and others probably like sanded with No. 80.

I have never bought a dowel in my life.

Any dowels I've ever bought seem to have been sanded to a 220 grit paper - they are pretty smooth. So it seems some species may need further refinement and some (like bloodwood) may not.
