i read a resent article on the center saver, the setup of the angle and the depth, where the author made/used some king of homemade template/jig for marking out the correct depth and angle of the setup..

Now i cant seem to find it anywhere..

One of the other danes where kind enough to lend me his center saver system during the summer....

How about this? If you follow this please let me know how it works out. Have been thinking about picking up McNaughton and wondered if this method made it easier.

Steve Russell also has a writeup on using the McNaughton on his website:

That seems like a lot of extra work to me. Two things I do, though not so much any more. I have cored thousands of bowls.

One, hold the blade up to the outside of the bowls to see how the curve of the bowl, and the curve of the blade match. The 2 curves almost never match. If the blade is more curved than the bowl, then aim more down the side of the bowl, rather than towards the center. If the blade is flatter than the bowl curve, aim more towards the center of the bowl.

Two, is hold the blade up over the top of the bowl, with the tool rest/gate in place. Hold it over the path you want it to take as you core. This also gives a visual idea of where to start the cut, and what path you want the blade to take. It never hurts to aim a bit shallow, and you learn from experience. You can make marks on the blade with a Sharpie to let you know when you are near the bottom, but again, this is some thing I don't do any more. McNaughton has a laser pointer, or you can make your own. I have found this to be really helpful in keeping me from making lamp shades.

I had thought about making some drawings to approximate the bowls and cores I would do, but seldom are any 2 alike. I found holding the blade up against the outside, and over the top to be very good in helping visualize the coring.

Mike Mahoney and I both have DVDs out on how to use the McNaughton. It isn't really a tool that you can teach yourself how to use, and the instructions that come with it aren't very helpful. Find some one near by that can use it and is willing to show you how, or get a DVD.
