Well, it's not real happy news, I had to replace my Craftsman Chainsaw. So I bought as much saw as I could afford. So I got a Stihl MS 290, the dealer is just down the road. I liked the idea of having someone close by to service it if something should happen. Husqu... well, I'd have to buy over the internet or or at Lowes.

Not used it yet, been busy with a ball game and wife wanted to go today and get a new laptop. (Which I'm messing with right now).

So, you chainsawers out there... did I do okay?

Jon,

The loggers in Idaho.....the one's I've talked to ......Stihl or Husq.....

I think you'll like it.

I have a 32 year old Mac.....pro model.....it just keeps on running. If I ever have to replace it..........I'll buy a Stihl or Husqie from a local dealer for the same reason you did!

The MS290 is the saw of choice for a lot of turners in my area.

Anything Stihl! I've got an old 390 that I wouldn't trade for anything.

My local small engine shop recommended the MS290 as his chain saw of choice. His only negative is that it is a bit heavier than some similar models if you are going to be doing a lot of woodcutting. I have been very happy with my 290 (and with a smaller Stihl), as I'm sure you will also.

You did good. The MS290 is one of the standards of the industry IMHO. I've got a MS390 and I've been very happy with it. I also think you'll be better off working with a local dealer than with the Borg or the Internet sellers. Well done, and happy cutting.

Jon, I believe the Stihl you bought is the equivalent of my .029 Farm Boss...great machine and worth the investment. Congratulations! Mine would have cost me $200 less, too, if I hadn't bought the "cheap", homeowner chainsaw from the 'borg first. ;)

Congrats on the new saw! I just got a Stihl 310 w/ .375 chain and 20" bar This spring. I tired of the BORG stuff that is "disposable". Next purchase...Stihl Weedeater! I love it! Enjoy and safe cutting!

Jay, Stihl makes good stuff, but look for a Shindaiwa dealer for the weedeater and try to have a look. They are known as one of the best trimmers in commercial/landscaping and you won't be disappointed. My neighbor is a die-hard Stihl fan but his Stihl trimmer died and he borrowed my Shindaiwa. He came back raving about it.

I swap out blade and string heads on it and it tackles anything.

Thanks everyone for your input!

I finally got to cut a log... well rip one just before the storm came in today.... AND OH MY!!!! It wasn't like cutting butter, but cutting a piece of bread with serrated knife. WOW!!! Never new how much a piece of junk my craftsman was till now.

I have the same saw, about 5 years old now, and who knows how much wood it has cut. I still like my Stihl! One thing though, make a mental note of how well it cuts now with a new very sharp chain, clean air filter, new spark plug, etc. Then if it starts to drop off on its efficiency, remember to check those things and keep them like new. It makes all the difference in the world.

Jon congrats on the saw. I had a C-man saw and bought the Stihl MS310. You can't even compare the two. Love the Stihl and I agree with Curt about the efficiency.

I just bought the MS390 Stihl model. It came with the 25-inch bar, but I bought a 20-inch also as the 25-inch seems mighty long for normal every day use. Came with a nice hard plastic carrying case.

Anyone heard whether 10% ethanol gas will do harm to the machine? The manual says to use minimum 89 octane but is silent on the ethanol issue.

Jeff,

I'll bet if you contact the local Stihl dealer, they can answer your question.

Ken, I asked when I purchased the saw. They said to call Stihl directly. I plan to do that Monday.
