One of the first times I used a recess and I heard a ticking sound. Was just ONE cut from being done when it blew up. This is the aftermath.

Well my stubbornness came out and after I gather all the pieces that I could find, out came the super glue.

I lost a little in size but here is the finished product.

Tamarind - 4 1/2 x 1 3/8 - Danish oil finish. You can see one of the few cracks that did not blend in with the mottled coloring close to the rim on the front right edge.

Could not have gotten away with this if the wood would have been monotoned but then again it would probably not have cracked.

Nice save Toney! Great looking bowl and you did a really nice job getting it as thin as you did! Hope your next one stays for the whole show!

That's a beautiful piece and an excellent save...certainly worth the time and effort to glue it back together!

What happened to you is one of the reasons I don't advocate for using a recess for bowls...there is not enough wood to support around the jaws on a form like this and it will let go way too easily. A short tenon sized for the chuck's "sweet spot" with a shoulder to support the top of the jaws gives a better mechanical grip on the workpiece. Now for platters or very flat bowls...a recess is the way to go as there is a lot of wood outside of the recess even during final turning to provide support.

Thanks to everyone for the comments.

Jim, this was the first time I used a recess and I did not consider the wood being spalted and I am one that, unfortunately, thinks that the tighter you make it the better it is.

I was lucky that with all the lines in the wood you really have to look hard to see the repair.

My problem is that I don't often listen to that little ticking sound when it first shows up and for me there is always "just one more cut". :)

Looks really nice though..... Lazarus works for me.
