Has anyone built a thickness sander jig for use on the lathe? Is there more to it than turning a cylinder, gluing some sand paper and adjusting the height of the support table?
Appreciate some tips or reference to plans.
Thx

you really dont need a thickness sander for doing segmented things. just glue it up and make sure that one side of the rings are even. then sand that side on the belt sanded or hand sander to get off extra glue. glue it to your peice. turn off the uneven edges. then take a peice of 40 grit from a belt sander and glue it to a board sand the peice on the spinning lathe and measure the thickness of the ring once in a while. thats what works for me

Norm,
Here's a write up for one I ran across. http://www.stwt.org/drumsander.pdf

Also just type in "lathe thickness sander" in google
& it will give you more I think.

Norm I just recently made myself a thickness sander from parts from a sander I bought several years ago. It works great with the added advantage of having the velcro drum. The only drawback is that its stand alone and therefore needs an electric motor, I use an old furnace fan motor on mine. It was quite simple to make and although crude it is very efective:D. I bought the original parts from these guys: http://stockroomsupply.com/. I can post pics if you are interested.

Mike R.,
Good reference. Thanks.

Mike G.,
Would like to see pictures of your version. Have Ph.D. degree from "Crude But Effective School of Design", so yours sounds very interesting.
