Here's a link to a story (http://news.yahoo.com/nphotos/Most-Emailed-Photos/ss/1756;_ylt=AvcO32e2DqAYRgpcB2WghmxsaMYA) about who really took the picture ... ;)

Me-thinks the fog has a spin without the wind

Holey Photoshop Batman :D

As the brits would say
'Note the nearby trees are quite unconcerned of a pending windstorm' and 'the swarming debris decided not to show up at all'

I dunno, Craig, but Rob's link makes the photo appear legit. Depth of perception is difficult to ascertain here and I think the trees could be affected but in a still photo, it may be hard to tell.

If you ever lived in tornado alley you would be able to tell that is a fake picture. A horrible fake picture at that I might add. I've lived through a couple tornadoes and a hurricane and they don't look or act like that. :D

That is a picture of what the damage really looks like. Still think that there tornado in that picture wouldn't have flattened those silos and ripped every leaf off of every tree in it's path?

The photo could have been shot with a telephoto lens that would make the background look closer than it really was. The funnel could have been quite a distance from the trees and silos that show in the photo.

I'd suggest reading the story at the paper that originally published the picture - link to the Mitchell County Press-New story (http://www.mcpress.com/articles/2008/06/18/news/news01.txt).

Guess i dont really want to put my hand in the fog, nor my finger near the vortex :o

I didn't read anywhere in the story that says that they proved it wasn't a fake. All I read is that someone sent the photo into the newspaper. They could have easily altered it on the computer before emailing it.

Like I said before. Tornadoes just don't look like that. Both of the tornadoes I've been through there has been hail before hand, leaves flying about, and much more and that picture makes it look like someone 'shopped a tornado into a picture of a sunset on a farm. It's just to pristine to be real.

Of course we at the Press-News verified the photo and also directed them to speak with Mehman herself, which occurred later in the day

The Globe Gazette and Mitchell County Press News reported that Lori Mehmen of Orchard, took the photo from outside her front door.

Although I am a photographer, it is difficult getting those from my cellar during a storm warning.

Here is a link from the same guy with a lot more.

I just saw that photo on Snopes. It's the sight I use every time I hear what sounds like an urban legend or see a pic that looks unbelievable.

From Snopes: "Meteorologists who have viewed this image (as well as other photos and video taken of the same storm) generally agree that it pictures a
mesocyclone with a wall cloud, not a true tornado."

Tornado or medocyclone - they are still some amazing photos.

Be well,

Doc
