Last August/September (late posting, but I'm relatively new here), I decided to build the jewelry box for my sister's 50th birthday. I was looking around to purchase the first piece of jewelry to put inside for her, then it hit me. Just get the loose sapphire (September's birthstone) and mount it on the box..... well, that's what I did. Really a beautiful touch, and she loved it...... I thought I'd share this idea for all the Jewelry box builders. If you're like me, we could stand for hours trying to pick the right thing to put inside.... but, incorporating a gem in to the box, much easier! This is Walnut & Cocobolo & Sapphire.

Ed,

I did a similar thing with a cabachon last year.

The stone matched a stone inlaid into the pommel of the sgian dubh the presentation box was designed to hold.

I didn't think the red jasper would show up very well against the white oak, though, so I inlaid a rectangle of bog oak into the middle of the lid first and then inset the cab into the bog oak. I was terribly pleased with the end result.
