I am finishing up painting the two hanging wall cabinets for my shop. The paint on the doors is drying as we speak. I hope to hang the doors tomorrow.

Is there any general rule for the vertical position of the hinges on the doors?

I can't wait to get them finished so I can start putting 2 years of "stuff" away!

if there is, i'd like to know, too. I generally just place 'em equally in from the ends ... some days that's 2" ... other days that's 3" ... maybe there IS a standard or I'm not the rogue hinge hanger I thought I was?

If they are butt style hinges where you see the barrel or pin , I generally space them one hinge length from the ends. On doors over say 40" in length a third hinge centered between the two may be a good idea.

This generally is a nice "look" IMO , YMMV.

On man doors / room to room doors , 7" down from the top , 11" up from the bottom the third IF there is one centered between the two is a industry standard.

There no set standard except to keep the hinges close to the rails of the door as possible. Roughly 2.5-3" top and bottom. Compensate for overlays, rollouts, etc...

Mine are typically 3" down (or up) from the top/bottom.

If Jack, Jim and Steve recommend 3" ......who am I to argue with them!

Thanks!

3" OC is pretty standard for cabinet doors. I do 6" for the bottom hinge on R.O.'s

For frame and panel doors, I mount the top hinge with the top of the pin in line with the bottom of the top rail. And the bottom hinge with the bottom of the pin in line with the top of the bottom rail.

It's a little detail, but I feel that it adds to the finished look.
