You don't say what kind of mahogany you are looking to buy, but here's a screen scrape from the current Hearne Hardwoods (http://hearnehardwoods.com/hardwoods/pricelist/pricelist.html) price list so you can see the ranges from one supplier I'm familiar with: (board foot prices)

In SoCal it's $5 to $7 a bf. Seems to go up and down by the shipment at the local yard.

What exactly is "genuine" mahogony? Does that mean that it comes from South America? Are there different species of SA mahogony? I hear of mahogony from Peru, Brazil, etc.....refered to as Brazilian or Peruvian mahogony. Are they the same species, just from different places?

Thanks!

"Genuine" mahogany means Honduras Mahogany. The tree grows in Central America and South America. The term grew up to distinguish against stuff like "Phillippine mahogany" or "African mahogany", which are not mahogany at all.

Make sure it's mahogany.

seems to me that Mahogany is used to label nearly everything from real Mahogany to a whole wider range or inferior dark colored lumber species and prolly even boxes of rocks with left over Dioxin and PCBs poured in.

"Mahogany" and "professional" are two of the most horribly mis-used words I can think of just now.

Just bought some Genuine Mahogany at Woodcraft for 50% off. Usually $10bf, got it for $5 a board foot. They also had African Mahogany for 20% off. which brought the price down to $6bf. Don't know if other WC's are doing the same or not. This was at the Clearwater, FL store.

Looking at your list those prices you were quoted are in the $14-$15/BF range. Thats a bit high by almost any standard for Genuine South American Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla for clarity) rough lumber. You did not specify what milling might be included in those prices, as milling charges can add up quick, and I am curious as to why they are gluing up 16/4 blanks for you? Why would you pay them to do that? Do they not sell 16/4 mahogany? I would want to do that part myself.

Also the lengths you specify might have to be cut. I have rarely seen mahogany shorter than 96", though occasionally a pack may include 84" material. I wonder if you are not paying for the part they are cutting off as well?

$7.20 is a more reasonable number if you are talking about the same species. Here in CT I'm paying between $9-$12/BF for PATTERN GRADE GENUINE SOUTH AMERICAN MAHOGANY, prices vary based on length, width and thickness, with relatively wider and thicker material costing more per BF.

Here is an interesting link that explains some of the confusion related to the term MAHOGANY. It may help you make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

Last time I bought african mahogany at Yukon, it was about 5 ish a bd ft. Honduran mahogany was a bit more if I recall. That was about a year or two ago.

If you provided those dimentions to Yukon for a price quote, then you should assume that their quote includes milling the pieces to your specifications. That is shop charges and labor included in that quote. Buy it raw and size it yourself.

Peter,

Is Pattern Grade distinguished by mildness of grain (for ease of cutting, stability, etc.) and perhaps width and/or thickness, or by some other characteristic?

Even within the Swietenia macrophylla group (and I agree with you, this is what I mean by "genuine" Mahogany), there are more interesting and less interesting boards; the best stuff, though, is hard to beat for beauty under finish.

African Mahogany has always seemed a bit coarse-grained to me. And forget Philippine....
