This weekend while using my table saw I began experiencing a problem with it starting. This is an older Grizzly contractors saw. The problem is it did not want to start when I pushed the on button. If I pushed the on then the off several times I could get it to run. I am looking for ideas about what to check and how to check. While this would be a good opertunity for a new saw, it is not the best financial time if I can fix the saw for a reasonable amount.

If it's a magnetic switch, it's probably time to replace it. Grizzly cabinet saw is doing the same thing, and we've replaced the switch once already because it broke apart inside.

I suspect you have a problem either with the start capacitor or the motor's start switch (more likely this). You can e-mail Grizzly tech support techsupport@grizzly.com . Give them the t.s. model # and they can help you with replacement parts.

I had this problem with my old Craftsman tablesaw back in '96. It cost me $60 to call Sears service. The guy came out, asked me if I had a compressor with a blow tip. I handed it to him, he blew out of the motor and switch, and it started up just fine. Dust gets in the contacts. Cheap fix. Try it. If it works, send me $20. :-) Todd.

If repetedly pushing the switch will make it work it's most likely sawdust in the switch. If it were the start cap the only way to make it go would be a new capacitor.

(this might be your strategy)

John: Dear, come out to the shop and look at this.

SWMBO: What's wrong sweetie?

They walk out to the shop together. John repeatedly snaps switch, nothing happens!

John: I guess it's finally given up the ghost. I don't know what I'll do, I really love this saw.

SWMBO: It's okay sweetie, it's long past time you got yourself a new saw. I read on that creek bulletin board thingy that what you really need is a cabinet saw. Here's the checkbook, you go out right now and don't come back without one......

Hey Jim,
Time to wake up! Sorry, but its time to get back to reality.
Take care,
Jim

Thanks for the replies. I will check out the switch. Question : Could I use a wall swith as a temporary fix until a new switch arrives? I wouldn't want to use it for long this way but only until a new switch arrives if I need to order one.

Sure, you could use the wall switch provided it's rated for the voltage and amperage of your saw. I'd try cleaning everything first, though. I've been amazed at how many times that actually works.
