This is a piece that Paul Warnock (My partner in crime) and I just completed for a client. We're fairly proud of it even though it's not the normal free-standing furniture that we enjoy building so much. It is a Fireplace surround counstructed of Solid Mahogany and Ashburl Veneer. The design is our own, but the colors were chosen by the clent. All molding including the Cornice under the mantel is hand cut. The mantel is a mitred torsion box that hangs on a cleat. To give you a perspective of the piece, the mantel is 7' wide and the ceiling is over 9' tall. Any comment, remarks, or criticism is always appreciated.

P.S. I just found this forum today, so go easy on us. Thanks.

Go easy??? For what reason? It's stunning!
Simply elegant came to mind when I opened the thread. The handwork is also something to be proud of.
Well done...and welcome to the Creek. I look forward to more of your work.

Steve,

Ash burl...now that one is a bit unusual and it looks fantastic. Superior job. How did you finish it?

Also, you may wish to change your name to two words...I'm not entirely sure it is required in the "Terms of Service" since it appears to be your real name. You might have a loophole there! :)

You don't need an intro you need your own school. Where do I enroll? Welcome and show us more.

The Mahogany is PDC with Garnet Shelac, and the Ash burl was actually dyed to hit the color the client wanted then polished with garnet shelac. Since the fireplace is gas and the encasement is actually built out about 4 inches from the brick we thought there would be no heat issues with the garnet shelac.

Welcome aboard. Nice piece of work indeed. Good idea on the torsion box mantle to control weight.
Did you hammer veneer the center panel, or vacuum bag it? Also, is there a small strip which separates the ash burl panels? Ebony, or perhpas pearwood, ebonized?

I found your website by accident from a path in the replybox, and your other work is also impressive. How long have you guys been in business together?

Alan

I wonder if Glen got it the way that I did. When I hit reply, the path showed next to the pictures, even though I was not looking for it.

The panels were all bagged. I have hammered before and since I purchased a bag life is so much easier. There is boxwood stringing (ebonized in between each panel. As for the business, it actually started last year. Paul and I had each been building a few pieces here and there and then we were given some work by a local interrior designer. Not exactly what we wanted to do, but it was income. So Paul and I have been partners for about 8 months. We both do this part time, but it's starting to look like it could be more. Right now we're booked through August. That's good, but it is only part time, but we both put in about 20 hours a week each. Thanks for all the praise. I'm very glad to have found this forum.
