Here is a small maple HF I just finished. You have to love Maple. It is around 5"dia by 4" high. I used my home made hook tool to return under the lip of the bowl. The opening was only 3/4" green. It ended up around 1" after returning the bowl to true it up. This bowl is turned from scrape I got from a large blank that I cored 5 bowls out of for a friend.

nice "stony" wood! Can we have a pic of the DIY tool as well?"

Do you find the forces acting on the tool tip cause it to turn more than you'd like it to or do you counter this with a shapely tool rest? I ask this after trying to use the same tool on captive rings and fighting to stabilize the bit horizontally.

Jack - good looking hollow form! Beautiful wood, finish and love the shape! Very nice work!

Thanks Steve. Norm, The tip of the cutter is as close to the center of the tool as I could place it. It has no torque on the tool as long as you have all the bend in the tool, past the tool rest. If you get any of the bend on the tool rest it will cause the tool to torque. Hope this helps.
